This is dangerously close to politics conversation and I think needs to be locked before it gets out of hand... Where's the politics? Hit Girl's comment could possibly be construed as making a political statement, but scummy news broadcasters sensationalising an already sensationalised event for ratings isn't an especially political topic. Believe me, media sensationalism, especially in the US, is an entirely nonpartisan enterprise.

24 hour news channels are the problem. With so many hours to fill, they end up exaggerating stories and even more damaging, they repeat stories incessantly. I've seen experts talk about how this adds fuel to the fire when it comes to mass killings because it brings fame to the killers, who are named over and over again along with their photos being shown, and footage of distraught victims, flashing lights and wailing sirens, and general social disruption.

The internet plays a part, too, but yeah 24 hour news channels are the worst culprits of this, regardless of respective political bias.
As part of my communications major, I took a media ethics course and it is absolutely stunning how often every 24h news channel has f***-all for ethics.

When I was a kid, you had the morning news, a bulletin at lunchtime, more news at 6, then the main evening news at 9 or 10. If anything big happened, the scheduled programming would be bumped for news coverage. You didn't even need flashy graphics or any of that shit. Most of the presenters were old geezers speaking with a formal dialect. It was clipped, concise, detached and professional. It was enough to keep you well informed. The rise of the 24 hour channel also led to the hosts become celebrities in their own right, which further eroded journalism.
