I want a good playlist featuring both group and solo stuff. What are the essential tunes I need to have on it?

You really can't go wrong with anything from Enter the 36 Chambers. The entire album is great.
Apart from that, the song Triumph I'd recommend, as it's one of the only songs with all 9 Wu-Tang Clan members on it.
As for solo stuff...ODB's Shimmy Shimmy Ya and Brooklyn Zoo, GZA's Liquid Swords, Ghostface Killah's One, just to name a few. It's really hard to choose, because there's a lot of really good stuff on the early solo-Wu Tang albums (and there's even quite a bit of good stuff on the later ones too).

Back In the Game & Iron Flag/Da Glock (from "Iron Flag") - First one is Wu-Tang on a very non-RZA beat, but it's smooth and has a really great verse from GZA. Iron Flag has a smooth beat with some really sick verses and Da Glock is seriously one of their hardest songs, IMO
Raw Hide (from ODB's "Return to the 36 Chambers") - ODB, Rae, and Meth batting clean-up. One of my all-time favorite Wu songs.
The City & Cash Still Rules (from "Wu-Tang Forever") - Deck had a sick solo track on this album and Cash Still Rules just bangs.
Paragraphs of Love & Guest House (from "Ghostdini: Wizard of Poetry") - the first is an R&B-ish song that Ghost somehow pulls off and the second is a great example of how well he tells a story Broken Safety (from Rae's "Cuban Linx II") - Raekwon with Styles P and Jadakiss, this whole album had an amazing vibe to it.
Just a few, but I tried to suggest some that weren't suuuuuper obvious (if that's even possible)

A slightly more obscure one: "Fast Shadow" from the Ghost Dog soundtrack. RZA produced the whole album and its really worth a listen, but this track is the only proper Wu track on it and it's a jawn.

Take the skits out of 36 Chambers and add all of Pretty Toney, Cuban Linx and Liquid Swords. Then Rollin' With You & I Can't Wait off ODB's second album, I Can't Go To Sleep from The W, Reunited and It's Yourz from Wu Tang Forever, the original version of Ghost Deini with the Diana Ross sample & Old Man by Masta Killa

If you're talking about stuff from their group albums, there are a lot of them, but off the top of my head: Protect Ya Neck (The Jump-Off) from "The W."
Gravel Pit
Uzi
Shaolin Finger Jab/Chamber Music
There are also good songs from some of their solo albums. I recommend "Meth vs. Chef" from Tical, as well as "Release Yo Delf."

Need to think about this more deeply, but Glaciers of Ice is a must have.

I really feel like any Wu playlist has to open with 'Bring The Ruckus.'
And get 'Triumph' on there, since everyone is on it (even if ODB doesn't get a verse).

So I took everyone's recommendations into consideration, along with what I already knew I wanted on there. Here's what the final track list wound up being:
1. Bring Da Ruckus 2. Shame On A... 3. Protect Ya Neck 4. Method Man 5. C.R.E.A.M. 6. Can It All Be So Simple 7. Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nothing To f*** With 8. All I Need To Get By (Method Man) 9. Meth Vs. Chef (Method Man) 10. Release Yo Delf (Method Man) 11. Brooklyn Zoo (ODB) 12. Shimmy Shimmy Ya (ODB) 13. The Riddler (Method Man) 14. Glaciers Of Ice (Raekwon) 15. Liquid Swords (GZA) 16. Daytona 500 (Ghostface Killah) 17. Triumph 18. Cash Still Rules 19. It's Yours 20. Ghetto Superstar (Pras feat. ODB) 21. Got Ya Money (ODB) 22. Protect Ya Neck 23. Gravel Pit 24. Uzi 25. Dirty And Stinkin' (ODB)
I'm still putting it together, but plan to give it a listen while sippin on a 40 later. Thank you everyone for your invaluable assistance!
