Depends on which version you're discussing. The original Skeletor, before they rebooted the storyline for the Filmation cartoon, was a literal demon from another dimension, who wanted to use Castle Grayskull to open a portal in order to bring the rest of his demonic brethren to Eternia to conquer.

Even in the cartoon he pretty well wanted to destroy and/or conquer shit. Right on the package it says Lord of Destruction. He wasn't messing around; he just wasn't that successful. Most of the time anyway, sometimes his schemes worked for a lil bit. plus, originally the Masters of the Universe was what they named the villains; that's where that came from. I.E. they were trying to enslave said universe.

Or the early 2000s cartoon version that started out as a conqueror BEFORE getting the skull face, and the incident that caused that just making him insane.

Yeah, I've met a bunch of people that thought he-man's buddies were the Masters of hte Universe... but it said pretty definitively in the cartoon something like "Skeletor and the EVIL Masters of the Universe"
