This is a possibility that has come up in my office. We are going to be making a major changeover at the end of the month, and it has been suggested that packages could be offered for those interested. I have already had my mind made up to seek another job regardless, so the idea of just taking a severance while I search around for a new one has some appeal. Any advice?

I'm "taking" my first one in a couple weeks. Told our branch was closing back in February, just about have everything wrapped up...but I already got my next job lined up so that big ol' check's going right in the bank.

Yeah I did from my last job. I was laid off though, so it wasn't as if keeping the gig was an option, but at least I got the package as well. Thankfully was only outta work a couple months. The severance was enough to put back into savings a bit.

2.5 years ago the store I worked for was bought out, so they gave me a severance. Got a job 2 weeks later and used the severance to pay off a student loan. *thumbs up*

Ask yourself how much of your regular pay is covered by the severance. Then ask yourself if you think you'd find a new job before it ran out.
A couple years ago, I was offered a buyout and severance would've covered the equivalent of three months of pay. I was not confident I'd find a job in three months, so I stuck around. I have no regrets.

I think it boils down to whether you can can a new job before it runs out. An Office Depot I was at closed and I planned on talking the severance but it would've only been three weeks and I wasn't confident I'd find another job so I moved to a different location instead. Ended up quitting a few weeks later as an opportunity with a friend opened up, but when that job didn't work out I was out of work for the better part of a year. Funding work can be tough these days. But if you're confident you can find another position easily, have at it.

Of o take it, then combined with the vacation time I am owed it would be three full months pay. I am going to spend a week in Charlotte NC in July to seek work and am already setting up interviews. So I am looking at it and kind of saying why not? Would just open my schedule that much more to pursue work.

No, but I've never been in a job where getting fired would be anything other than a kick in the ass (though I've mercifully never faced being fired before either)

When my last job let me go, they offered me a months pay as severance but I had to sign a release first saying I gave up my rights to sue them for anything.

I did.
Got a sweet compensatory package ontop of it too for staying til the portfolio was 100% sold off.
Between that, severance and unemployment I made more money not working for a year than I ever did working. Especially when I wasn't paying to take the train to SF, eat lunch out there, coffee etc etc.
