I actually did not see this when it came out. I wasn't even avoiding it, I just didn't get around to it. Then, I heard about its infamy over the years and outright avoided it. Then, when the Blu-ray finally dropped years ago, I figured I'd give it a chance, thinking it couldn't be as bad as people made it out to be. Not to mention, I'd loved Batman Forever's schlockiness as a kid. I was still nostalgic for that movie, and this one supposedly amplified that film's campiness by a billion, so how bad could it really be? It's by no means a good movie. But I think that strong, negative reaction comes from it following Burton's films, and to a lesser extent, Forever. Those were darker films, so for us to all of a sudden get what was basically a glossier version of Adam West's Batman just didn't jive at all with the atmospheric continuity. Like it doesn't belong in the same universe as its predecessors. If it stood on its own, and wasn't a sequel to those first 3 films, it might be looked upon a little more favorably. Even if it had stood on its own, I still would have despised it for its version of Bane. I wasn't even that big into comics at the time, but I had read the YA novelization of Knightfall and Bane was just so awesome.

Bane still would've been terrible. I just meant it would've made certain aspects of the film more tolerable and forgivable.
