In general I mean. I graduated in 93 and I don't have kids, but I hear stories from others that do and from grandparents and obviously things have changed through the years, so what's your take.
A couple of the bigger stories in my area, is for the upcoming football season, there are only about 17 kids interested in playing and they're kind of imploring kids to give it a shot. I don't know if it's because of the dangers (One local doctor strongly feels that there will not be any high school football in the next 20 years) or, as a friend of mine suggested, perhaps we are finally seeing the generation of kids that would rather be on their phones than get out and play ball.
Another story I hear about is in math class for example, I know a kid who solved the problem, but the teacher wouldn't accept it because he solved it in the wrong way.
So what things have you noticed that has changed since you were in school and what are your feelings?

I found out through some friends with younger siblings that our old high school became known for a massive drug problem. It was hard for me to believe because there wasn't any signs of any instances with drugs going on back when we went there.

One thing I've heard, actually from parents, is that the amount of homework has gotten insane.

Students curse like its second nature. No filters or fear of consequences. And to be honest the consequences are pretty light.!n NYC at least, the system 100 percent sides with students and not teachers in terms of accountability and meeting standards. In short, if a kid is failing and/or being a dick, the teacher must be at fault.

I heard they got rid of cursive.
How the hell are these people supposed to sign their names when they get older?

S-A-W-F-T ... SAWWWWWWFT Also, One thing I've heard, actually from parents That's as far as anyone needs to read any statement before stopping and immediately dismissing anything that follows. Any time I'm out at a restaurant or whatever or at a ball game or movie and hear some parent say anything about their kid's school or what's going on, it's shamefully ignorant.

I kinda want to take a peak at history books to see what has been added since I left school. I heard they got rid of cursive. How the hell are these people supposed to sign their names when they get older? Well cursive is a waste of resources at this point and most schools are extremely limited in those. It was originally taught as it was the only way most high school and colleges would accept their essays and applications and such... but that has been made obsolete due to computers. also the majority of times I personally sign anything tend to be receipts which are also being made obsolete due to computer pays... Students curse like its second nature. This is new?

The whole Common Core thing makes sense. I really wish parents would attend school conferences and ask questions. My son is going into third grade and they were showing us what they do for common core. His teacher also told us that they'll be teaching them the straight forward way to solve problems. Her reasoning for Common Core was that it taught the kids to use other methods to solve a problem. Which to me makes sense.

In regards to football, I think a couple things are going on. One thing is that there are more choices of sports. My school now has a golf and skiing team. The other thing that came to mind is that if a team has 30 consecutive losing seasons, it really becomes the uncool sport, no matter how bad the parents want their kids to play.
One thing I've noticed in working with my karate students over the years is how much lazier both the kids and the parents are. If the skill is just a little bit like work, the kids give up immediately. When I was a kid, a parent wouldn't think to waste their time and money on an activity the kid wouldn't do. Now the parents dump off their 5 year olds and they're nowhere to be found, or they're texting on their phones while their kid is causing holy hell.

There really isn't a lot of changes in the schools around here besides obvious things like more emphasis on technology, having kids email in assignments, etc. I do think it's cool that my kids are getting more access to things like a variety of foreign languages choices. We had Spanish or French, that's it. Schools here offer Russian, Latin, Japanese, etc. I think that's cool.

I'm just glad I graduated just before schools started focusing heavily on technology and discovering that internet was a thing with plagiarism checking.

Like of course we cursed about we knew when and where we could get away with it.

Eh I mean I teach PE so common core doesn't effect me but I see the work from time to time. You don't need to draw a diagram to know 2+2=4 (hyperbole but you get the point) many kids know how to do basic arithmetic but get frustrated and do not undertsand how to when they have to do in alternative ways. They going simple to complex.

How do scools and teachers handle cell phones? As far as I know, they may or may not be allowed in class, but kids do get on them

How do scools and teachers handle cell phones? As far as I know, they may or may not be allowed in class, but kids do get on them It depends probably on the school and the class room. I have subbed for years and have been in classes where they are a no go for sure and others where they are ok to have out at certain times. The big problem I have had is with students taking phone calls during class and it apparently being their parents and that is something that is a big distraction and also I feel like parents should know better than to call them on their cell phones.

When I was in high school, which was 2000-2004, we had one kid whose phone went off in class. The teacher took it, and answered it, and had a conversation with the person on the other end. This is the same teacher who would also wake up students by slamming a rubber mallet on the metal radiator. He bore a passing physical resemblance to Squidward.
