I've always been terrified of this happening, but luckily it has never happened to me. I'm also one of those people who is constantly checking his pockets for wallet, keys, gum, cigarettes, lighter, wallet again, cell phone, wallet again, cigarettes again, wallet one last time, and then finally discover something new. I honestly start to have panic attacks if I don't have these things on me at least 16 hours out of the day.

DON'T CARRY YOUR SSN CARD ON YOU! There is NO reason to do so. Yeah there are. Plenty of documentation that requires my number and knowing myself, I'm afraid it's gonna slip under something and I won't be able to find it any more if I keep it at home. Plus I want to be sure I have it on me when I go to the doctor or the pharmacy (don't know how it works in the US but in France, the SSN card is also swiped before you make a payment so you are automatically reimbursed). I once lost mine when inevitably it contained lots of money. Someone found it, contacted my parents and held it for me while I went to collect it. There are some honest people out there, dude - I feel your pain, but you might yet get it back. I'm not worried about someone stealing it. I already had the credit card cancelled so even if some ill-inentioned person finds it, they won't be able to do anything with it, and I must have had about 12€ tops in there. It's just annoying. :/ The main thing is, it's gonna take ages to get everything done and in the meantime, I'm gonna have to write checks and look up papers like some sort of caveman! Didn't notice you were French. That makes things different. In the US a social security card is just a paper card, not even laminated, with your 9 digit social security number on it. You don't need to present it for hardly anything, ever, and since the number is used by a multitude of things to verify your identity it is dangerous to carry it with you (though many people still do it without thinking, presumably because it is wallet sized) It is basically easy access identify theft if you carry it on your person. We don't have universal healthcare, so there is no nationwide standard for reimbursing payments at a doctors. If you have insurance, usually they'll ask for your drivers license and insurance card.

I do this all the time... and have started panicking when my phone was on the desk in front of me and not in my pocket
