Had to buy a new DVD player for my bedroom tonight. I just grabbed a Sony one didn't think nothing of it. Get home, switch them out, no HDMI output. Which I found odd, but whatever. My cable box is component, so I'll just use the HDMI output on that and the component on the DVD, no issues, just switching cords. The f***ing cable box doesn't have HDMI output!!!!
So, what's the deal? Was it too nice just having one cord back there? I have enough as is, now I'm gonna need a shit ton more.

Was the DVD player an older model?
From what I know, recent Blu-Ray players (post-2011) did away with analog video output (composite, component) to conform to the "Analog Sunset" rule.
Also, some newer DVD players (mainly the less expensive models) only feature composite outputs.
And to answer your original question, HDMI isn't going away anytime; HDMI 2.0a (which supports up to 4K Ultra HD video) is backwards compatible with previous HDMI standards.

I dunno, it was a low end Sony one. Like $45. I just assumed it would have HDMI. It's 2017, what doesn't have HDMI now?

To my knowledge HDMI is still the standard for HD hookups including 4k.

If you just got a dvd player that's not all that surprising since it's just standard def. If you got a Blu-ray player with no HDMI then I'd be wondering.

Sounds like cheapo/outdated equipment. HDMI isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Yeah I didn't see you had said a DVD player. I don't think I've seen a standards DVD with hdmi because DVD isn't HD.

Oh it's just a DVD player? That explains it. Straight DVD players don't tend to have HDMI inputs because they aren't HD. Usually, at best, you'll have component inputs (aka, Red-Blue-Green Video, Red/White audio) to take advantage of progressive scan.
But as far as modern day blu-ray players go, it's all HDMI. And video cards are even phasing out VGA/d.sub and DVI in favor of HDMI and DisplayPort.

I was gonna say, if HDMI is on the way out I'm in a world of shit...particularly with the pun of my forum name/website/twitter handle.

Earlier this year bought a friend a cheap DVD player and it didn't have a HDMI port. I assu e it was removed to save money. Honestly now you can get a decent Blu Ray player for 55 to 60. And since Blu ray players play dvds also there is really no need to get a DVD player anymore.

The only reason I can think of to get a regular DVD player over a Blu-ray, besides price, is if you still have an SDTV or a much older HDTV without an HDMI port. And even then I think there are still a number of Blu-ray players that have component outputs.

I had no clue there was ever a mono DVD player.

Guess I'll exchange for BluRay. I only have a few BluRay discs, so DVD was just easiest.
