There were what felt like 40 Beethoven movies, so this isn't terribly new. Of course, that's kid flicks versus comedies, but all the same.

and then there are the Air Bud sequels... which eventually spun off into a series of talking dog movies somehow...

First one made a whopping $187 million worldwide on a $20 million budget. That's what gets you a sequel.

There's a great quote from legendary TV producer Fred Silverman about how the entertainment business works. It was essentially "Read the contract. It says all kinds of things...what the budget is, who does what, everything...but nowhere in that contract does it say the show has to be any good."
