We have one for wrestling, but real sports are just as guilty of this. I'll nominate Disco Demolition Night. Now, I dont like disco, but this whole promotion, even if it didnt go awry, was trying to take an opinion, and make it into a total endorsement from the White Sox. I wonder if there were any WS players who actually LIKED disco.

This whole bullshit with special uniforms for whatever occasion/holiday/special cause happens to be upon us has got to stop. I know baseball and basketball are guilty of this.
That offends me more than anything. Sure, we'll auction off the jersey and give the proceeds to a worthy charity. (So we hear.) Who in the hell is fighting over a Ross Gload jersey on the auction block?
Just take whatever you plan to put aside for new threads and donate that.
(Edit: Raising awareness does not bother me, it's creating new merchandise that offends me as a fan.)

One that fells wrong for me in this vein is when the NBA celebrates Latin/Hispanic culture by adding an El or Los to the team names. I don't know, it just feels kind of iffy. I know some teams can't or don't need to be translated(like the Knicks or 76ers), but some effort could be made for teams like Las Espuelas (Spurs) , Los Halcónoes (Hawks) La Magia (Magic).

Not sure if it qualifies as disgusting, but UFC having CM Punk make his debut on PPV knowing full well that he was going to get crushed. I know that Punk wanted the fight, but at the end of the day he was a white belt with zero real fight experience.

I wonder if there were any WS players who actually LIKED disco. That was Mike Veeck's (Bill's son) first crack at game promotion. If you know the backstory, it's because one of Chicago's top rock stations was formatted to now play disco, and young guys like Mike were pissed. And if you've heard me talk about shirt-sleeve Bill before, you know where there's a dollar to be made, he's gonna go all out. Would have he done a disco promotion? If this demolition night had gone better, I'm sure he would have. But his reputation took a serious hit after this disaster, and he pretty much laid low - only doing a few ethnic nights - until he sold the team in 1981.

Ten Cent Beer Night. Not so much disgusting as it was "Who on earth possibly thought this was a good idea?"

One from the ESPYs tonight. As nice as it was for Eunice Kennedy Shriver to get the Arthur Ashe ward for the Special Olympics, they completely lied and whitewashed the fact that Rosemary Kennedy was lobotomized and, for the most part, abandoned by the Kennedys because they thought of her as an embarrassment that would get in the way of their ambitions.

I didn't pay attention much to the ESPY's last night, but how did they whitewash it? I'm just glad the Shrivers were a lot more compassionate to their children than Joe Kennedy Sr. was to his.

They mentioned that Eunice was inspired by Rosemary and played it off like Rosemary was always mentally handicapped when she really wasn't. Again, I have no issue with Eunice getting the Arthur Ashe whatsoever. She was, by all accounts, a sweet women who genuinely cared about those less fortunate than her. It's Just that, when talking about how Eunice always showed compassion for her sister Rosemary, don't act like it was because she was always mentally handicapped. She wasn't. There genuinely was nothing wrong with her until she started acting like a normal, rebellious teenager and Joe Kennedy decided that just wasn't going to fly in his vision for his "perfect family" and that needed to be stamped out ASAP. Maybe I was a little too harsh to the Kennedys as a whole when it really was just Joe who was the jackass in this instance.

The Penn State - Nebraska football game after Joe Paterno was fired was the most digusting thing I have ever seen in sports. Children being sexually abused and it's the football program that's the real victim. We live in one hell of a society.

Did Penn State actually have anything to do with that as a promotional tactic or was it just the fans being scumbags about it? Though a couple of years later, Penn State did have an actual Joe Paterno day honoring his legacy during a game against Temple, I believe. Though I'll give Temple's fans credit who showed up there and were witnesses to that debacle. In the true spirit of Joe Paterno, during the ceremony, they turned their backs and looked the other way.

Harold Ballard. Pick anything he has done. I don't there has been an owner that has been as equally incompetent and evil as him. That guy is a literal criminal who was actually convicted of fraud while the owner of a team and still resumed ownership after being released in prison. Oh and he let a pedophile ring use The Maple Leaf Gardens and might of participated in some of the orgies. You know you f***ed up when Wikipedia can't even list half of your crimes.

There is a really good documentary about the Jerry Sandusky case called Happy Valley. It's amazing to see the cult like atmosphere around the campus towards dear leader Paterno and his team. Like some guy protests against the game arguing that it's inappropriate to have this game in the wake of the scandal. Dude got accosted, sometimes physically by people saying "come on, man. It's about the kids!" Which by "kids" he must mean the players on the Penn State football team. Because if you gave a shit about the victims you wouldn't be hassling the protester.

The Penn State case is going to be a minefield for a long while. Whether or not the football program should have gotten the full-blown death penalty that the likes of Southern Methodist got will probably always be debated, but when the scandal broke, I recall seeing waaaaaay too many folks eager for super duper draconian measures, with everything from basically burning State College to the ground and salting the earth to retroactively negating every degree ever issued by Penn State. I get there's an element of the university proper turning a blind eye or enabling anything to do with the football program, but some folks seemed eager to have the punishment be whatever would cause the absolute most collateral damage.

The victim complex, excuses, and flat-out denial, even years later, displayed by a number of Penn State fans, students, alumni, faculty, and administration was almost as disgusting as the actual crime.
That's part of what made me go from the attitude of "there's widespread cover-ups and the people involved should be punished but that's it" to "The entire damn university deserves to rot in hell. And when they get there, they can say hello to Art Briles."
