Now that Kenny Omega has won the IWGP United States Championship, I am curious the defenses will work. Obviously he will defend the belt on NJPW shows, but considering the belt is for the US, will he be defending it here? I know in the past there have been rumors of him having work-visa issues and that being why he didn't work the US War of the Worlds shows, but now that he is champion will that change? Will he defend the title at ROH ppvs or maybe an occasional PWG show?

Having him defend it every now and then in RoH, and having RoH treat NJPW's brand new belt like it's a bigger deal than Cody's RoH belt might be a good way to build up the feud between them.

Probably on dual ROH/NJPW shows. Doubt it will be on ROH only shows. NJPW affiliates like RevPro will get a defense or 2. But mostly in Japan.

I'm sure he will die after or during every defense.

It also makes Ring of Honor look even more second rate to New Japan than it already is. So Delirious will probably be trying to book Omega in title matches with dudes like Beer City Bruiser as we speak.

I clicked on this thread thinking the youngest member of the Spirit Squad won the WWE's US Title....
Seriously.

Canadian Kenny Omega winning the inaugural US title is as stupid as American Shawn Michaels winning the inaugural European title.
NXT has done it right with a Brit winning the inaugural UK title.
/kayfabe
Edit: Nope. I am wrong here. I still think it's a bit strange they had Omega win NJ's first US belt, instead of one of their actual US wrestlers. But it's not really a huge deal as I amke it out to be.

Seems I am as stupid as I claim the booking decisions to be.

I think the point is Omega is the face of New Japan for the US/North America. Out of the Americans in the tournament,Lethal rarely works in New Japan, Paige is a part timer and actually Juice would have been the 2nd best choice being both American and a full timer. But they went with Omega due to the name and popularity.

I'm half-expecting NJPW to end up buying RoH and turning it into their own NXT (more or less) before too long, anyway, heh.

ROH hasn't been bringing in nearly as many NJPW wrestlers during the past couple of years, and actually have had a number of guys go over NJPW wrestlers at a higher clip than previous years during that time. Don't think ROH will book it as bigger than their belt, but I do think they'll manage to get Kenny in for at least a few defenses here and there. I'm curious how long Kenny will be holding it for, he could certainly give it a lot of credibility, but he could also hold it for a relatively brief time since the big deal was getting his name to be the first associated with it.

from this week's Observer
To be honest, there's not a lot of wrestlers from ROH that I'd like to see Omega defend against. As far as match quality goes, I think Jay Briscoe is one of the stronger choices (or Mark for that matter, but Jay is the bigger singles star). If Jay White is still working ROH, I think he'd be a good choice. Maybe Dalton Castle.

The current RoH champion is part of the Bullet Club, and group has 3 members who are in a group together called The Elite. That should be a sign of the importance of the various members. In addition, Cody Rhodes lost to Okada at the weekend in a match that The Rainmaker was on top for the majority of. I don't see RoH booking their champion as strong as the NJPW US Champion.

It will be defended in wrestling matches. "Championship reigns are determined by professional wrestling matches, in which competitors are involved in scripted rivalries. These narratives create feuds between the various competitors, which cast them as villains and heroes."
