Serious question here. Would those bitter fans who apparently have some sort of unknown vendetta against Brie Larson, do you think they would've hated Terminator 2 and Aliens if they were released today? Both feature strong prominent female leads who went from being timid, frail, and naïve to straight up badass heroines. I just never understood why they're so against a female who just happens to be a superhero. There were certainly some who had an issue with the new Mad Max simply because Max wasn’t the only hard as nails character in the movie. So my guess would be yes.

I always thought the Fury Road backlash was from people who never saw previous Mad Max movies and assumed it was all about him and when they saw it were disappointed that he was Tidus to Furiosa's Yuna (minus the romantic subplot).

Huh, outside of the crow stuff that doesn’t age well at all, I always thought Dumbo was seen that way. It got a lot of love from Disney VHS “classics” previews back years ago before the feature presentation. Like it’s not Lion King/Frozen/Aladdin tier, but it’s celebrated the same way Bambi, Robin Hood and Sleeping Beauty are. Dumbo has always been an underperformer for Disney. Original was barely over an hour long and wasn't well received at the time. Funny thing about that is that production costs on it were so low that it and Snow White were the only Disney movies to turn a profit pre-1943. Despite not actually making very much money it probably kept the lights on because they were having loss after loss leading up to it.

Despite being regarded as classics now, Pinocchio, Fantasia and Bambi all tanked in their initial releases, largely due to the European market being closed due to World War II. They didn't make money until they were re-released years later. Dumbo and the other cheap package films of the 40's helped keep things running until they scored another smash with Cinderella in 1950.

I saw it today.
Absolutely hated it. Pacing issues, the leads never felt in any danger whatsoever, at the end of the movie Carol's powers basically became a total win button (same problem Thor: Ragnarok had), the explanation for Fury's eye is dumb as hell, as was the big mcguffin.
Oh boy they thought that cat joke was hilarious didn't they.
Edit: Oh, and also if you're going to show a bunch of dudes discouraging Carol's success - since she apparently never had a single positive male interaction in her entire life - could you at least not make them RIGHT all the time? Sort of undercuts the message. Let us see her succeed a little! Prove those jerks wrong!
"Hey don't swing to that rope, there's no way you'll make it"
*plummets to earth*
"Hey you need to slow down when you drive*
*Crashes vehicle and nearly kills self*
"Hey you shouldn't fly planes"
*crashes plane*

One, the plane crash was in no way her fault - she was being fired on from an amazingly-advanced alien warship and still managed to land it in mostly alright shape. Two... I actually think it works to the movie's benefit that she's basically completely unstoppable at the end. We need to buy her as the absolute be-all, end-all hero for what they're positioning her as, and really there was no realistic way they were any sort of threat to her there. I really think it's for the better just having a big dumb scene where she effortlessly wipes the floor with them, especially with her being smart enough to just pull an Indiana Jones when the time comes for it.

Exactly, like you could argue it hurts it slightly as an individual movie (I’d disagree slightly but the case can be made) but at this point in the MCU, they need an audience to buy someone who can potential stand toe to toe with someone who effortlessly wiped out half of all life in the universe and some real heavy hitters like Vision, Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange. And, as I mention again as the first end credits scene showed and the crowd reaction to it, job done to be honest.

To use a wrestling analogy, Thanos is Brock Lesnar and marvel have fed the entire roster to him to get him over as an unstoppable monster heel, with Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor playing the part of Ambrose, Rollins, and Reigns. Carol is Andre-slamming era Hogan come forward in time to even the odds.

Yeah, it definitely was a boon to them due to being so lower-budget, but it didn't get the critical accolades and reviews the others did. It was the "Eh, it was okay I guess" installment of the series, to put it in modern terms.

After seeing Captain Marvel, I'm worried that Avengers 4 will be about how much harder the superheroes have to punch Thanos in order to beat him. I get that this movie about Carol Danvers was made to put over how much of a powerhouse she is, even when compared to Thor and the Hulk. But I want to see Thanos defeated because he was distracted, tricked, or outsmarted; I want to see Thanos' victory undone because of his hubris, vanity, or insecurity. I think a 'might makes right' ending to Avengers 4 would be absolutely terrible (and really, really boring). We'll see in four weeks if my worries are well-founded or not.

Honestly I'm still not 100% convinced Thanos is actually going to be the main villain. If only because I think him not being the final threat in Infinity Gauntlet is one of the more clever things about it.

After the backlash they received from the Iron Man 3 swerve, I doubt they'll be quick to set up Thanos as the big bad in Endgame and have some other villain swoop in and steal his thunder.

The issue is she was like that BEFORE the big win button in the end. She's never in any serious danger the entire movie. In her first fight scene she beats down an entire spaceship worth of aliens while handcuffed. Where do you go from there?

As for "they need someone who can stand toe to toe with Thanos, power wise."
They already have that guy. It's Thor. That was the point of Thor's entire structure in Infinity War, him building a weapon that would let him kill Thanos. And he nearly did it at the end of Infinity. He just hit him in the wrong spot. Plus, you can't outpunch the Infinity Gauntlet. That's not how it works. Nothing in Carol's power set would do anything against, say, being turned into construction paper with the reality gem.

The whole point of the 'her failing' montage was the getting back up. They were as subtle as a hammer to the head with it, but it worked. That's why those guys were "right".

It would only work if it was Galactus. There's a fan theory floating around about how we'd get there. While it has its flaws, it's not totally far fetched. Basically, the idea is that Thanos wanted to wipe out half the universe' population (including living resources, like plants and animals) to make it less desirable for the world eater. Again, it's an idea that isn't without its flaws. But I could envision the Russos finding a logical way to get there.

Given a delay of another year, or Fox giving up the FF rights in late-2017, and they could've done it.
