I'm thinking the Jets figured out how some teams do it in the Indoor/Arena Football World (since a lot of those numbers are exaggerated), and thought, "Why didn't we think of that before?"

Don't people get into preseason games free on gameday if there's no sellout?

Fun story to share:
In the ABA, there was a team in Miami called "the Floridians" (that was the name, no city or region). They would have something on the turnstile that would tick a number for the attendance every time a person went through. So, the players would make little side-bets among each other what the predicted attendance would be. They'd play and figure out "Well, 350 people", until about halfway through the first quarter; one of the ushers would grab that turnstile and just spin like mad (attendance counter clicking really fast) as if suddenly 2,000 people were rushing through the gates.
That team was well noted for bumping attendance. They had a game happen at the same time as a Colts-Dolphins AFC playoff game. Maybe 200 people showed up. Not one media rep or sports reporter. So they "settled" on saying 1,750 people were there in the box score. And media people complimented them! "Hey, helluva crowd with the Dolphins playing and all!"
