Now this is partially related to the Rick and Morty sauce fiasco, and I'm not trying to say there aren't people in various fandoms who make fools of themselves. Heck, I mocked the people freaking out in McDonald's like everyone else in the thread pertaining to it. Yes, there are weird, creepy people who latch onto things, but in most cases I've seen, they're not the majority. They're the ones giving normal, decent people who just happen to enjoy something a bad name.
These "I hate (such and such)'s fandom!" videos I constantly see pop up on YouTube.....like...god, they're awful. They're mean-spirited, unfair, and they're never funny. I'm a casual fan of R&M at best (my roommate adores the show), but I don't like the idea of groups of people becoming "acceptable targets".
Whether it's the Undertale fandom, bronies/MLP, Sonic fans, anime fans, wrestling fans, Steven Universe followers, the furry fandom, Five Nights at Freddy's fans, etc...it's bullshit that it's just okay on the internet to rip on these people simply for enjoying something. Like, how hard is it to freaking treat people with respect? If they're not hurting anyone (or causing trouble at a Mc'Ds), then they should just be left alone.
That's why I always make a conscious effort never to crap on an entire group of fans, ever, regardless of what the "weirdos" are doing. I certainly wouldn't want anyone to do that with the things I liked.
To any good, everyday person who considers them part of a fandom that's often bashed or maligned, I extend all my love and sympathy, because you don't deserve all that grief.

Agreed. Hating on things people like is a stupid and juvenile thing to do.

I think people who proudly boast how they don't watch a popular show or aren't into a particular movie franchise are the coolest people in the world

Going after an entire fanbase just because they like a particular thing? I don't get it. I might make a light hearted joke, whether I'm also a fan or not, but putting in any serious time and effort to insult them? No, I've got better things to do.
Mocking individuals because of the way they act? Fair enough. Some people deserve it, and it's not about the thing that they're a fan of, it's about their behaviour.
If I'm not a fan of whatever, it doesn't affect me at all. If I am a fan, it's much easier to find people to talk about it with sensibly (for lack of a better word) than those few who are bringing all the negative attention.

I have defended the idea of fandom In the past and I will continue to do so. It is true that unfortunately every fandom does have its fair share of arseholes, however I don't think it's fair to label a whole group of people toxic because a small group go out their way to be morons. As you can tell by my sig and avi, I am an MLP fan which I make no apology for, having been to plenty of conventions and posted on mlp based forums, I can safely say most fellow fans I have met in person are awesome and very relaxed, never have I experienced a toxic atmosphere around them.. I'm not saying there aren't arsehole fans, of course there are.. But for most part I think the reputation of being toxic is quite undeserved. Yes you hear stories of like that Steven Universe fan artist who almost committed suicide after being told to kill herself from morons because she drew a character skinny.. That behaviour is unacceptable and I would never defend it..But once again to think every Steven Universe fan is like this is just stupid.. I bet if you went to an SU convention it would be just as great an atmosphere. This problem is not exclusive to fandoms.. It happens Music and Sport as well. But I still stand that for most part the concept of fandoms are great, somewhere where you can share fanart, fan stories, cosplays, whatever it is. No fandom is perfect, but sadly the negative will always be remembered more than the positive, I know Rick and Morty seems to be the latest victim but I refuse to let it ruin my enjoyment of the show.. If I want to go "Wubba Luba dub dub" and "Pickle Rick!" Then I will. Obviously the important thing to remember is not everybody is going to like what you like.. Instead of getting heated about it we should just agree to disagree, but I know that won't happen. Either way I think Fandoms are great and nothing will change my mind about that..not even the odd dickheads. (Sorry that dragged on more than I thought )

I agree with everything you said, no fandom is 100% bad or good.
Except wrestling fans.
f*** wrestling fans.

Average fan? Sure I got no beef with them. But if you're the level of fan that is threatening people, and throwing tantrums in McDonald's and just generally taking it to an unhealthy, psychotic level? F*** 'em, I'll mock them endlessly

On a similar note - can we all just agree to stop acting incredulous or otherwise in disbelief when someone doesn't like/watch something that is very popular?
I mean, I've done it. It's a knee-jerk reaction, but there's no reason to be THAT shocked if someone doesn't like star wars or whatever.

If there's obvious swaths of people acting like idiots, I'm not going to bite my tongue. That's just the way I am. I never was the best at diplomacy, anyway.
Besides, fanbases also cannibalize their own for thinking differently. If people are going to give me a hard time because I hate what they think is awesome while love what they think is an abortion, am I supposed to take it with gentle good humor?
Sometimes the high road is overrated.

It depends on how you use it semantically I guess. Being a fan/appreciating something is one thing, and if that's fandom it's good. But if fandom means people who internalize something so much they let whatever they enjoy define them, that can get unhealthy even if those fans aren't obnoxious.
As with most things, it's all a matter of degree.

Yes, you are. It's better than responding to hostility with more hostility. That creates a loop of negativity. Who wants that? I've got warehouses full of things I love that's unpopular, and there's plenty of acclaimed things I'm not interested in. It happens. But I won't use that as carte blanche to attack an entire segment of people, or tar them with the same brush because one person decided to do something ridiculous. Like I said, it's a matter of showing respect.

But even then, there's the possibility they're still a normal, functioning adult who just happens to be a devoted fan of something. Those folks are also unfairly targeted by trolls as well, and it sucks.

Wouldn't you rather just show a sense of courtesy and maybe not attack people for enjoying something, regardless of the reason? That's all I'm asking for. I don't think I'm saying anything controversial here.

I agree with hating things/fandoms purely because of the things they like is lame. There's a lot of things I don't care for, but if you do like it, good on you.
My problem with fandoms is more with behavior within them more than anything. Lots of groupthink and ostracizing if you don't have the right opinions on certain ships or characters or episodes. There are also scumbags and outright dangerous people who lurk in the darker corners of some fandoms. How the communities handle such people goes a long way to shape my opinion of them.
