Documentary coming out next month on Netflix about Jim Carrey and the making of Man on the Moon. I'm quite intrigued, as I absolutely love this movie and I've heard a lot of horror stories of Jim's behaviour on set so this could be very interesting.

I wonder if Bob Zmuda has set the record for getting the most money exploiting a fringe celebrity ever? He's written multiple books on top of using Kaufman to continue to find press. He comes across poorly in some of those interviews as he likes to take a lot of credit for Kaufman's insanity.

I liked MOTM, but this seems so hokey. Especially considering how Jims been acting lately.

I remember the R.E.M song for the film also called The Great Beyond.
They didn’t they just use Man On The Moon? I mean it was about Kaufman.. did they really need to make a new song.. I guess they were hoping for an Oscar nom.

didn't Jim Carrey's behaviour piss off Jerry Lawler, I feel like Jim Ross talked about it on a Legends Roundtable even telling him something like "this wasn't what Andy was really like"

I'll wager that R.E.M. were Andy fans and just wanted to do a new song for the movie, rather than forcing a new song on the moviemakers just so they could use MOTM.

Man on the Moon is such a farce biography. So many things either completely inaccurate or blown out of proportion.
If it wasn't for Taxi, Andy's popularity would have been even shorter. People got wise to his act pretty quickly and most people got tired of it.
I thought he had some clever moments in the same vein as a Tom Green, but I didn't see him as a genius.

But they poke fun of the historical inaccuracies of the movie in the intro.

caught it last night. Mixed feelings on a lot of it. He really thought he was Andy Kaufman. Some parts were uncomfortable in the sense I was like "come on Jim, that's too far" For example while they were finishing up the movie where Andy got cancer and was frail, he really acted as if he was cancer stricken and weak off screen. That's pretty disrespectful to people who are actually sick. And I have doubts with how legitimate it all was, but Lawler really seemed to hate Jim's antics. I really doubt Andy was like how Jim was behind the scenes.

Goddamn. Been so busy this week forgot this debut yesterday. Might try and squeeze it in tomorrow between NXT and Survivor Series. Haven’t even touched Punisher yet either. F***

Watching this now.
The whole thing with Jim Carry and Jerry Lawler hating each other has to be a f***ing work. Just like lawler and Andy being a work

There was a video that made its rounds on social media about Jim and painting. A lot of people thought he lost his marbles, but I came away just thinking he had a different perspective. Here, yeah I can concede he has probably misplaced his marbles. He knows he's a good impressionist. It's just that or method acting. If he wants to believe that Andy Kaufman's spirit inhabited him, then neat but yeah I don't buy it. It was kinda funny and also kinda sad to see him mess with Lawler. He was egging Jerry on really well, but don't spit on someone unscripted. And yes, him acting like he really had cancer was in poor taste. It comes across very weird, like hero-worship and escapism for Jim. I don't think Kaufman was all the things Jim wanted him to be, and in the end it was just a really weird therapy for him to pretend to be someone he wanted to be (not necessarily Andy, but the things Kaufman represented to Carrey) and say the things he wanted to, and act out without reprocussions because Andy Kaufman did weird shit all the time, so it can be easily explained. Just kinda odd all-around, and not as deep and meaningful as I hoped it would be.

As someone who watched close relatives wither and die from cancer I understand some of the complaints about Jims methods. But honestly that didnt even bother me.
What struck me as weird was Jim remaining in character talking to Andys family and spending and hour with his daughter, whom Andy had never met. Multiple times repeating his methods being theraputic to them.
He has a christ complex, and definitely seems to have the self hatred as any other great comedian impressionist.
I think he may have been on point with Andy though. He was in character of what peoples perception of Andy was.
But would break character for Bob and others close to Andy. If anyone opposed his behavior they surely would have corrected him. And not sat around playing pretend.

I really doubt Andy was like how Jim was behind the scenes. From what I’ve heard Andy would barely say a word to any one backstage at wrestling except for for thank you. Of course, he also famously never cashed a single paycheque from Memphis either.
