I'd argue that Naito/Okada has one of the best accidental builds in history, considering that most of it comes from the fact Naito's first push failed and nothing he did got properly over with the fans. It's like a longer term version of Rocky Maivia to The Rock. Could we not argue the same about Bryan's accidental underdog push, or even Austin in terms of accidental pushes? Wrestling is unique in how audience reaction impacts how stories are received and to my mind the Naito story is about taking that reaction and using it to it's absolute peak. 4 years ago he was a joke, now he's the leader of the most popular native stable and is treated like a 'big 3' star (Okada-Omega-Naito). That's not a criticism btw, you're quite right. I just admire how NJPW have used that failure to make something better. I wouldn't really compare Naito to Austin or Bryan, more like the Rock. Both initially were rejected by the fans when pushed as faces and then turned heel to become the top faces. I also would like to add that I am more excited about Naito/Okada than any other match, even Jericho/Omega which I am certainly looking forward to. A bit off topic, but NJPW World and New Japan's English YouTube channel have a subtitled version of Tanahashi's Wonderland interview. He touches on this match and actually criticizes the feud. He says they are not making it personal enough. He also has a lot of interesting beliefs on the current product, philosophies on wrestling and shows his arm injury(which is worse than I thought).

As a match I dunno if I'm especially looking forward to Jericho/Omega. Here's some reality on Omega's awesome matches: They are all insane and feature a ton of dangerous spots. Flying through a table from inside the ring, dragon suplexes off the top rope or through tables at ringside, being piledriven through a table (well sort of), DDTing his opponent on the ring post, suplexing someone straight to the floor. Jericho is NOT going to do any of that crazy stuff, so it begs the question of what he will do and whether this will be all that memorable outside of the idea of doing it.

Omega's awesome matches don't need the spots. The spots help, but his matches are awesome because of the storytelling work he does. Look at his match with Suzuki in the G1- for me that's Suzuki's best match since coming back and it doesn't really have ANY big spots. And Jericho still has more in the tank in terms of athleticism than Suzuki. Omega can do the big bumps, Jericho can keep up in terms of pacing, and both are great at telling an in-ring story. It might not be the insanity of Omega/Naito or Omega/Okada, but I'm sure it'll be a great match.

I think the quality of the match will depend more on how the styles mesh and Jericho's willingness to adapt. While I am sure Omega could work with the WWE style, it would be better for Jericho to change things up a little bit. Also, I guarantee Omega takes a stupid bump in this match.

Suzuki/Goto is now Title vs Hair So Suzuki has to go full bald? That’d be kind of weird considering he barely has any ha- ...Ooooooh.

Wondering what happens with the NEVER Trios belt now. Not exactly thrilled about Suzuki vs Goto. Plus I'll be sad if Ishii and Nagata end up in some filler tag matches, or just the rumble.
Plus will Don Callis be returning to commentary or was this a way to write him out? It'd be a shame as I've enjoyed his team with Kelly.

I don't understand why they keep trying to give mini pushes to Goto after years of killing off any possible main event role. Just stick him in a tag team, his usual best role, and have him tear it up there. They could really use the bodies.

If EVIL and SANADA win the titles at WK, I'd love to see Goto and Ishii work a program with them. I'm still pushing for a semi-permanent Goto/Ishii team damn it!

They could still do singles stuff here and there, while tearing it up in the tag division with War Machine, KES, and LIJ.

The NEVER match is kind of a wet blanket on what otherwise looks like a top f***ing notch card, but it'll be an unimportant enough something that it hardly takes away from the good shit. Going to be a crazy show.

I do wonder how long the members of Suzuki-gun have signed for. It's coming up on one-year since their return.

Goto is usually the piss break during any NJPW show to begin with for me. So I'm stoked for this card.

The Jericho that we're getting in New Japan is so much better than plucky comedy heel in WWE. I love what he's been doing so far.
