I wanna play YouTube on my phone, in the background, and block the ads.
This...seems...impossible.
Pandora plays in the background, has unskippable ads AND I have no control hardly over what plays.
YT does NOT play in the background or with screen off AND has ads, but I can play what I want.
I want to play YT without ads AND in the background, best for driving... working out... etc
Any help?

YouTube Red is the official way to go for that. It'll get rid of the ads and allow for background audio play if my memory serves me.
Only catch is that it's $10/month.

I was concerned that Youtube Red paid creators less than ads, or even that they didn't get paid at all, but I believe they see compensation when someone with youtube red watches.

There's ways around the ads and I'll leave it at that. As for your issue of playing in the background, you'll have to get Red.

Honestly, given what you're wanting and how any official option requires money, I'd recommend Spotify over YouTube Red if you're wanting music. It's the same price and worked better than the trial of Red (unless they fixed the issues, I don't know).

I'm not paying, that defeats the purpose

Google play comes with youtube red ive been told. 2 for price of one.
I have nothing more to add other than yes youtube has become unbearable since the invention of red. Just like hulu when plus' limited commercial option came along. Overkill the ads to force a purchase.
