I actually thought he was a legitimately good commentator when he started on Smackdown a decade ago. He was in the Jesse Ventura mold of being a heel, but would hate some heels still and also give faces credit when they really deserved it.
On that note I love how MVP won him over by buying him dinner in kayfabe.

One is whenever they were in New Orleans he would reference Marie Lebeau Jean laffite cafe Dumond and other iconic "Nawlins" references. Sometimes that seems forced, bit with NO it seemed genuine, like he really
knew the city and not liked he read something on a pamphlet at the hotel.

Cole: John, if you were so great, why were you never King of the Ring?''
JBL: I was never in the tournament.
Cole: Yes you were!''
JBL: Oh, yeah....(quietly) I lost to Jake Roberts.''
For whatever reason I got a kick out of that retro callback.
