Distant Worlds: the Music of Final Fantasy
Date: Saturday December 2nd, 2017
Venue: the Sony Center for the Performing Arts in Toronto, Ontario
T-Shirt worn: Final Fantasy XIII ‘Lightning’ (what a mark)
This is the third time I’ve seen the Final Fantasy classical concert and it was probably the best. They’re celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of Final Fantasy this year and they played a lot of stuff they never played the previous times I saw it. The highlights came at the beginning when they played Valley of the Fallen Star (aka Cosmo Canyon) from Final Fantasy VII and You’re Not Alone! from Final Fantasy IX, two of the greatest songs in the Final Fantasy library. The new songs from Final Fantasy XV were also especially epic. And it was great to finally see Final Fantasy XII represented at this show after it being completely absent the previous two times.
Of the stuff they’ve played before Hymn of the Faith was still hauntingly beautiful. That was still the best part of the entire show. And One-Winged Angel; who doesn’t like One-Winged Angel? The only song I really missed from previous shows was Tina from Final Fantasy VI. The only song I really could’ve done without tonight was Maria and Draco, only because it’s fourteen minutes long and they could play three or four other songs in its time.
There are still a million other songs I’d want to hear. But most of those are songs that wouldn’t work performed by an orchestra. The conductor Arnie Roth kept his in-between song ramblings to a minimum this time and the two and a half hours flew by. They focused more on the newer games so the videos shown on the screen were all really good. Nobuo Uetmatsu was there again but he didn’t do much outside of come out at the beginning and the end.
Wicked show. I'll never not go see this when it comes to Toronto.
Sephiroth fistf***s the planet.
