LCD Soundsystem
Support: some DJ
Date: Sunday December 3rd, 2017
Venue: the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario
I almost skipped out on this show. First, when they came on sale I didn’t want to pay exorbitant big venue prices to go. Even the cheap tickets felt too expensive to me, considering what I’d have paid to end up where I would’ve. I hate big shows at big venues but I broke down and bought a General Admission ticket (one hundred dollars) because LCD Soundsystem is one of my favourite bands. But even the weekend of the show I had to work until 1am the Friday night/Saturday morning, had a Christmas Party and another show on the Saturday and was driving an hour out of town to visit my wife’s cousin on the day of the show. And this was an early show so by Sunday night I was like, “hmm, should I stay home and (I don’t know) sleep maybe?”
Am I ever glad I went. f*** sleep.
I did get to the venue WAY TOO early. The website said the show was at 7pm so I got there at 6:30. I entered to an empty hockey arena, which made me feel bad for LCD Soundsystem if they were playing to a small crowd in a big venue. Then I was treated to two hours of low impact dance music played by some DJ who may or may not have been the support act. After an hour of that (and a half an hour after the show was supposed to start) I found out LCD Soundsystem weren’t going on until 8:30. So I drank. A lot. And I was able to get two people back from the stage. Not hard because this may have been the tamest crowd I’ve ever been a part of.
Finally at 8:45 LCD Soundsystem came on and from the second Oh Baby started up any boredom and annoyance that had developed quickly faded away. They were incredible and I was hyped to hear some of these songs I’ve grown to love over the years. I was still pretty drunk when they started but even after the booze had seeped out of my system I still danced like a f***ing moron (I “Danced Myself Clean”). It was just so much fun to be in a crowd of people full of so much fun and enjoyment. Like I said, I hate big shows. But this was probably the best “big show” I’ve seen since Faith No More two years ago just because the music was so easy to enjoy and let loose to. And it was one of the most fun times I’ve had at a show. It’s hard to pick favourite song from the set because everything was familiar and awesome. Tribulations was one of the best because that was when the jubilation kicked in to its highest gear. All My Friends was probably the highlight because everyone was dancing like fools during that song. But the whole set was just awesome song after awesome song.
My only complaints are the usual: they could’ve played for another hour and there were a lot of songs they didn’t play that I’d have loved to have heard. But I’ll definitely see this band again.
And by the time they got on stage the venue had filled up too.
