So today in Australia, gay marriage is finally legal! The past couple of months have been terrible for the LGBTI community in Australia. Without getting too political, we had a postal survey on gay marriage, thankfully the result was yes. Today Parliament passed the bill, gay marriage was legalised. Gay couples will be able to get married at the start of the year.

I suggest any non-Australians do some research about this, as I would be breaking rules if I further explained.

This is one of those things where I hope in some class in a few decades from now, the kids will learn about the survey and say “hang on, gay people couldn’t get married before?”.

Nah, the Liberal Party didn't want to alienate their voters even though all polls prior indicated that the population overwhelmingly supported SSM. Of course they also tried to paint the Greens & Labour as the villains because they didn't even want the plebiscite to be a thing because it was a massive waste of money.

This is one of the few social issues I strongly cared about, and I'm glad to see they finally went through with it after what seemed like forever.

Given how there's so much awful going on in the world right now, this is some good news I can definitely use.

I thought it was for years, but I'm basing that on Strange Bedfellows. (The Australian movie starring Paul Hogan that was remade as I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry)
I quick search shows that involved a tax break for live in gay couples and not marriage.
Either way, woohoo!

My personal comment: Good shit. I support same-sex marriage
My mod comment: This subject is pretty political, but too big of a deal to be ignored. So everyone needs to try their damndest not to get political.

That's good news. Its still so sad that humanity has to be dragged kicking and screaming into the future like this.
Also, whenever I hear news of a country finally legalizing marriage equality it reminds me of this...

Don't understand why this has taken so long. Even as a kid from the early 90's I was surprised not so long ago that not everywhere had legalised it.
