I thought he did alright. Good thing they had Miz as his pro to build him as a babyface, crowd were behind him despite not knowing him that well, and he had a good showcase against Jericho in the main event of the show. Also he did alright in his promo when people were worried that talking wasn't his strong suit.

Time has vindicated them having Miz as his pro, but at the time, many people were firing vinegar out of every orifice in rage. Ironically, what they would have preferred is the same thing people hate in NXT's main event booking now. Hindsight's 20/20, though.

Jericho even argued with Vince that first show because Vince wanted to have Chris face someone else. McMahon is a terrible judge of talent.

I recall people being really annoyed that he kept losing matches left and right and was the first dude eliminated on proto-NXT season 1.

I didn't hate that Miz was his pro. This was my introduction to Bryan.
What I did hate was what turned out to be his FIRST losing streak gimmick.
Vince is a garbage person with no understanding of what anyone but he wants and he should go away.

In hindsight, Bryan being paired with Miz was a stroke of genius. It really elevated both characters. Miz is professional enough to know that he is never going to be Bryan in the ring, but he did what he needed to to get not only himself, but also Bryan OVER with his promos.
Miz is THE most under-rated wrestler in the business. Maybe ever.

During NXT, I remember Batista vs. Bryan and Big Dave put over the shit over Bryan holds, scrambling to the ropes and what not.

Vince had no idea what he had with D-Bry. Tried to bury him by losing every match, Regal and Punk telling Miz that Bryan was better than him, the infamous Bryan Danielson promo, Tiegate and the fallout from his firing, all the way up until the WWE Universe outright rebelled at his treatment. Bryan’s run has been completely amazing as a big F-U to Vince and the WWE’s old ways of doing things. It’s quite comical and indicative of his charisma that he became one of the biggest stars in recent memory despite the WWE’s best efforts. They’ll change the narrative and say that was the plan all along, but there’s just no way because they did some of the dumbest shit in history along the way.

They tried to cut out DBs legs from under him for 9 months, and the fans had learned from what they did to Punk to absolutely refuse to give up and not let Vince win. Vince win...its so f***ing ridiculous to think that a Vince win meant someone didn't get massively, MASSIVELY over. It took him 9 months to realize he wasn't getting his way, and then a year after this it took him 9 months to f***ing destroy Roman Reigns chances to ever universally be over as top face. A guy the fans really did love as a real badass character. McMahon is such a f***ing cancer to the creative direction of his company, and has been for SO long. I can't wait for him to not be in that position.

Wait, how is having Regal and Punk say Bryan was better than Miz burying him?
