PC and PG aren't the problem.

Honestly, there was more about Attitude looking back that absolutely sucked than was consistently good. The thing that made it so memorable was the array of talent and charisma in the main events (Foley, Rock, HHH, Austin vs. Mr. McMahon, etc).
As cheesy as the modern product can seem, I'll take it over race-related gang wars, blatant homophobia and the women being treated like strips of steak.
(Also, Cena's new film looks cute as f***.)

I've long argued that the Attitude era did more long term damage than anyone wants to admit. The booking of 'star vs star' ever week, match after match has burned out the fanbase and killed the concept of a slow/proper build. Why would I care about say, the Bar vs Ambrose and Rollins at (insert PPV here) when I've seen them battle it out on Raw in some variation 17 times already? And don't even get me started about the damage done to the titles.....

Smackdown has always been rated PG.

Cena had some good points and I agree, it doesn't matter if it's PG, it's the writing that is the problem. Also, the Attitude Era did do a lot of damage in the long term with the crash style booking.
But I am going to disagree about Austin not working in other eras or different parts of the world. Sure the beer drinking and middle fingers would be a problem, but fighting his boss? Not really, people hate their bosses all over the world. Part of Naito's success in Japan is his anti-authority attitude, blaming New Japan for his failures in the past. It's not as cut and dry as Austin, but it's still a similar mentality.

Current WWE pg is much more tolerable than when they first made the switch and were enforcing it as if it was rated G instead I think that was to try and lure back some sponsors and hammer home that they aren't going to be doing that '97 Russo shit anymore But yeah once they relaxed back to actually being PG it improved but still.

1997 is where I'd wanna go back to personally. That year was firing on all cylinders.

The thing that made it so memorable was the array of talent and charisma in the main events (Foley, Rock, HHH, Austin vs. Mr. McMahon, etc). Even then, what made it special for me was the crowds going apeshit for everyone and everything. On the rare occasion when crowds are white hot for the current product it rivals anything that happened during the Attitude Era.

Thing is, if you took the good half of the Attitude Era (that is, the larger than life star power, the hot crowds, and talent having more control with their characters) and combined it with the good half of today (bigger focus on wrestling, women being less sexualised), you'd actually have a good show.

The Attitude era has become nothing more than an afterthought. Time runs like a freight train.
