Now that scrounging up holiday specials is over, I'm back to checking out cult favorite 90s cartoons. These are the two we settled on for the time being. Your thoughts and memories of the shows?
P.S. Callie from SK = Gadget all grown up and having had a species change procedure.

Both were great shows. I think I watched Swat Kats more often, but Mighty Max had fun plots and a cool art direction.
When Mighty Max was syndicated, KPLR in St. Louis aired it weekday mornings right after the Mutant League cartoon. That was awesome too, though I was always taken aback by the level of violence that was allowed.
Monsters losing limbs, losing heads and green blood/gore were just dandy for 90's kids, I suppose. We were raised tough.

A little off topic of Mighty Max... it's honestly one of the very few toys just thinking about brings back a major nostalgic excitement. Other toys I usually feel warm about, but the thing was I never owned a Mighty Max set despite playing with many of my friends'. I may want to pick one up at some point because those were badass.

We were raised tough. Back in high school, I never watched the cartoon but knew the toyline ("If you don't fight back..." "YOU WON'T SURVIVE!"). Some kids were talking about it and how they saw someone getting impaled or something like that. SWAT Kats wasn't innocent as far as body counts went. No parachuting grunts out of plane explosions or anything like that. There was one episode where a character was mutated into a bacterial monster who could split himself when blown up. When the heroes discovered heat would kill the parts of the monster, they did just that. No one emerging from the goo, freed from his mutated state. The beast was DEAD, as was his previous form.

Two of my favorites growing up. Mighty Max was a cool show which did the "edutainment" right with their after episode explaining some historical or science info learned in the episode. It's how learned what quartz was. Also, any show with Tim Curry voicing the villain is already great.
Swat Kats was a great action show. I had the figures, Razor and T-Bone. The episodes are online for download and I burned some DVDs back in the day, but they also showed up on Boomerang once and a while.

I wish I had watched more of SWAT Kats growing up, especially to get more of Gary Owens in a 90s cartoon role, but for whatever reason I rarely caught it while it was on.
Mighty Max, on the other hand, was my jam. It had everything a boy in the 90s could want: action, adventure, monsters, mutants, aliens, dinosaurs, sorcerers, ancient magic, mythical locations, battles, by-God-NORMAN, etc. You name it, they had it. I re-watched a lot of the series a few years ago and not all of it holds up, but the basic structure and vibe still do to a large extent.
Plus, you're graced with a triple-play of great voiceover work with Rob Paulsen (Max), Tim Curry (Skullmaster), and Tony Jay (Virgil the walking chicken...fowl, actually).

SWAT Kats was good. Anyone else find Callie Briggs... attractive? Like I can't be the only one... Don't look at me like that. It can't be just me.

Don't forget Richard "Bull Shannon" Moll as the aforementioned Norman.

It's not weird, I'm sure it was the designers intention. I mean, Callie's drawn like an attractive woman with a cat ears and a tail. Even her nose isn't so much a cat. It's not the same as a bipedal cat like the Swat Kats or any male cat on the show really.

Mighty Max was a good show. I didn't see all of it, but what I did see of it, I thoroughly enjoyed.
Swat Kats, though?
I F***ING LOVED SWAT KATS. One of the best shows in the 90's, and an underrated classic. I'm so glad I have the Complete Series on DVD.

They got away with plenty of stuff in their own right. But who are you going to trust, two fuzzy cats or an ugly mutant?

I remember Mighty Max, I used to have a VHS tape with a few episodes on it as a kid. I'm pretty sure I also had one of the toy miniature set thingys, I don't remember if I still have it or not though.

They got away with a LOT in a decade where Spiderman wasn't able to so much as punch people more than half the time.
"If you kill me, you'll be no better than me!" Norman: "I can live with that." -knocks unarmed villain off of a cliff-
