Well, in ECW, they freely mentioned WCW and the WWF. I remember in the WWF, they mentioned WCW in a somewhat vague sense. What I mean is that it's all one "universe". For example, Hulk Hogan is a multi time WWE Champion. No matter what organization you are watching, this is true. Rey Mysterio in Lucha Underground is the same Rey Mysterio from Mexico, ECW, WCW, and WWE. Chris Jericho in NJPW is Chris Jericho from WCW and WWE. AJ Styles, Finn Balor, Gallows, and Anderson are all still former Bullet Club guys and this is acknowledged. The history of a wrestler is never erased, unless they are playing a new character like when Isaac Yankem became Kane or something like that. The only example ever I can think of where wrestling didn't share canon, was in the early days of ROH and TNA. TNA would have guys that were arch enemies in ROH as tag partners and friends on their show. Guys teaming and feuding in different places at the same time is nothing new and goes back decades. What many of you are not getting regarding this question isn't a matter of canon from the POV of the audience, but from the POV of the internal storyline and nothing else. That's what's being asked here. For many years, the WWF's internal storyline continuity did not really allow for the existence of other promotions. Many were presented as brand new characters, and even when someone's past elsewhere was acknowledged, it was done as vaguely as possible. It was almost it's own universe, similar to LU or even GLOW. That didn't really change until the mid-90s when things got more loose. On the other hand, WCW publicly acknowledged other promotions more often, allowing their existence within the WCWverse.

Exactly! WCW’s biggest story was initially based around the WWF.
