It legit scared me as a 7 year old. But later, it was so bad it was good. The cartoony shit made it watchable. The only thing I criticize in retrospect is that they buried most of the heels on the roster by having this gang of bad guys who couldn't keep down Taker for 10 minutes, and at various points were getting their asses kicked. For as bad as people say DX/Spirit Squad was at times, it was 2 guys taking on 5, not 1 guy taking on 10. But DX were 2 people, the Undertaker was an undead zombie at the time. Totally makes sense. They were still doing that a few years later when all the heels ran out to help Makind bury the Undertaker-literally.

Yeah DX are just supposed to be 2 great wrestlers. Taker, esp at the time, had superpowers. You're either all in on that or not.
It's why Bray doesn't quite work. They half ass it. Either be realistic, or go bonkers. There is no middle ground.

I've said it before and it bears repeating, even though it represents my own fractured psyche & no one else's: ruined the Rumble match that followed it by having virtually every heel in the match come out.
I'm a real tickler for hating talent re-use at a Rumble, probably because of this Rumble match. The fun of a Rumble, despite having a full lineup beforehand, is seeing guys for the first time that night jump in the ring and brawl. This particular match felt like rehash of stuff we just saw a little while ago.

I thought the 10-man beatdown itself was a great storytelling piece. You have all these heels from the locker room who have had enough of Taker being seemingly unstoppable, so they all decide to just gang up on the MF'er and get rid of him. That would have been perfectly fine on its own. Ya, I was totally into as a kid and was following along just fine with the match, even if I was screaming at my tv for the faces to come out and help Taker. But the supernatural shit afterwards; ya, that made me embarrassed to watch wrestling in a room all by myself

I watched this on PPV and absolutely loved it. Taker looked like a beast, it took the entire heel roster to beat him and in the end, he still left with his head held high.
I'll fully admit, though... if it happened today, I'd shake my head and just feel embarrassed. But it was a different time, I was a different age, I wasn't so jaded, so I have no complaints about how it happened.

It was fun. A ridiculous, overbooked cluster but a fun ridiculous overbooked cluster.

I was fine with it. I'm not sure if WWE would be wise to bring it back, that kind of thing is more suited for a Lucha Underground character. But at the time, it fit Taker's character and it was totally in line with how cartoony the product was back then.

I was 14 and I stopped watching wrestling pretty soon after. I think I was growing up and WWF was still proving to be a kids product.
I probably would have loved it if I was 10 or 11.

Undertaker was my favorite wrestler growing up and I loved the whole thing. He was an undead zombie with supernatural powers, you had to go all in with the goofy shit. I can see how a wrestling purist would've despised the whole affair, but a traditional write-off, like an injury, would've ruined the character. You really needed to be a kid during that time just to appreciate the zaniness of it all.

Yep, I also loved this as a kid.
I could also name at least half a dozen things the Undertaker has done that are equally as hokey. It's why it's a one-in-a-million gimmick.

Even so, if it happened today, there would be so much vitriol and hatred that even kids might have a hard time enjoying it. After a month or so they'd just have to be cool by overemphasising how bad it was, like they do today with anything the internet finds awful. Yet back then you were allowed to enjoy crap like that a lot more, despite I'm sure many people hating it at the time.

Either be realistic, or go bonkers. There is no middle ground. I get it from the perspective of booking the UT and it did work for him making him look strong. But for guys like the Headshrinkers or JJ, you look like jobber fodder.

This was my first PPV and I was absolutely hooked by the end of the show. For all the shit this match gets, it helped make a lifelong fan out of me.

I remember thinking how did Taker have the energy to turn on his casket cam.

The silly ending aside, I loved the heel conglomerate. It wasn't just Yokozuna & a bunch of geeks. You had Diesel, Kabuki, Tenryu, Jarrett, and more.
To me, that was fun.

Jarrett was so new at the time he felt totally out of place, the rest were a good group of heels (Diesel, Bam Bam, Crush, The Headshrinkers, Tenryu, Kabuki and Adam Bomb were all big guys)

To be fair, that was because Mankind and The Executioner were taking forever to bury Taker according to Foley
