So I watched this at the time and remember it being great.
I rewatched it this morning to show one of my partners how good it was and it is nowhere near as good as I remember it.
I think Sting's entrance is great and the no-sell of the guitar shot is one of the greatest moments in all of TNA, but wow isn't this just the perfect example of everything that TNA would get wrong even at their peak?
- Sting is gone for two months, comes back to a rapturous ovation and is immediately dominated for most of the match - Clusterf*** finish with Kurt Angle as enforcer and weapon shots instead of Sting going over the heel champion clean - Sting gets gassed SO quickly - Incredibly slow, boring pace - Crowd is actually a tiny bit split, cheering Jarrett sometimes and even with duelling chants
How did they get this shit wrong even at their best?

What I remember from this is that they spent the last year and change building up Samoa Joe as the greatest thing ever, he was crazy over and the timing of this show was perfect for him to win the World Championship. Then they shafted him in favor of the old WCW guy. And Joe's career never really recovered from it. It was at that moment that I realized that TNA was just never gonna get it.

Yeah it felt like one of the big pivotal moments where TNA could have actually embraced the future and made a new star... and instead decided to go backwards.

The match was average at best but it's the best buildup of all time in TNA's history.
It started with Jarrett attacking Sting and running away from him for a full year. I wish wrestling would do more angles like that.

The no sell guitar shot is definitely one of my favourite TNA moments, but yeah the match beyond that wasn't great. Very good show overall though, BFG 06

The match was average at best but it's the best buildup of all time in TNA's history. It started with Jarrett attacking Sting and running away from him for a full year. I wish wrestling would do more angles like that. The build up for the match itself was terrible. Once Sting took the two months off. It went south because they had Joe playing keep away with the belt. They went weeks without even talking about Sting. Then finally the last couple weeks before the PPV they aired the vinettes but of course mean while Jarrett is still chasing Joe to get the stolen belt back. If you didn't follow TNA close you would sworn it was Jarrett vs. Joe. Not Sting and Jarrett. Joe was in a random Monsters Ball that had next to none build for because Joe was busy playing keep away with Jarrett.

I hated the build as Joe had a right to a title shot beating the champ on the previous PPV, but I liked the encounter as Sting looked motivated enough to change up his ring gear. I wish he would have stuck with it to be honest.

I watched it recently and yea it wasn't great(but it's JJ, I don't think I've ever seen a great Jarrett match) but there were good moments. Sting brought it and was in great shape. No t-shirt.
I think JJ was waiting for a top star to come in so he would lose to him and then let him be the star so he could take a break. Notice, JJ was hardly seen after that match. But I wish he would have lost it to Joe and pass the torch to a young guy.
Although they could have build for Joe vs Sting after that.

Jot me down as one of the people that remembers more build into a Jarrett/Joe rematch that never happened. I honestly don't know why they didn't use this opportunity to actually make something of Joe, but looking back on TNA's history you kind of just sigh and say, "Yeah, that makes sense for this company".
I mean it's not like you couldn't just change it to Joe/Jarrett after Sting no-shows a contract signing. Or you could turn the match into a triple threat.
But I guess it was for the better anyway considering Joe/Angle was going to be next anyway, and I don't think anyone would want Kurt with the belt so soon.
