So D.I.Y split up after Ciampa attacked Johnny Gargano, and then after a few matche where Johnny would become distracted by references to the team..it didn’t go anywhere. I’m not even sure if Tomasso has been seen more than once since the split, and now he’s not even mentioned when Gargano is wrestling.
What happened?

Ciampa got injured at an unfortunate time. Hopefully he'll be back soon in a timely fashion for Johnny's main event run.

My guess is that at Takeover, the idea will be that Zelina tries to use the same shirt distractions to try and throw Gargano off again, but this time it doesn't work well enough to end the match. To that end, the first Gargano/Almas match was meant to build up the story so he can have a way to finish up his arc of getting 'over' the trauma even with Ciampa gone.

Ciampa was injured before the turn even happened. He worked that last match to set up the angle and then took time off to rehab, presumably so that the reaction when he returns will be huge.
I don't know how long they said the rehab would be, but isn't a match where Gargano has an NXT title shot the perfect opportunity?
But then I always said Ciampa should come back to challenge a fighting champion Gargano after a few months of his reign, because then Ciampa can chase the title while Gargano chases revenge.

He had to have knee or shoulder surgery which put him out. He worked through injury so that DIY could put over AOP and turned on Gargano and should be returning to the ring by Takeover New Orleans.
So he'll either interfere during Gargano vs Almas or he'll be first cab off the rank for a title defense

Apparently Ciampa needed three surgeries. He tweeted something about it but has since deleted it. Both shoulders and his knee. Ciampa has been teasing returning to a persona similar to his Psycho Killer persona once he returns, which was a big reason why they did the heel turn split before he went away. The idea being, either people will wait for his return and the beginning of his feud with Gargano, or if they forget... his return attack will be so brutal, people will immediately take notice.
Although I'd love for Gargano to beat Almas for the title then have Ciampa immediately lay him out, as much as I want Gargano to take the title.... the impending DIY feud doesn't need a title at all and they could carry the feud all the way to the summer and it'll still be fantastic. So I'm assuming either Ciampa will cost Gargano the title, or Almas will win and Ciampa will attack Gargano after the match or on the first taping after Takeover.
