injuring fans at wrestling events

Just putting this out there for those posters who are in the biz....

I had a scare at AWF last night when a spot outside the ring sprawled into the crowd. One dude got his finger dislocated(thankfully not broken). The promoter and all of us in this match apologized to the guy who was thankfully super chill about it but had to leave the show to go get it looked at.

Any of you guys had something like this happen at an event you worked?

I grappled an hostile guy that jumped the barrier and ran in the ring to the mat and held him defenseless while my tag partner gave him the business. I didn't want him to, I was fixing to save the guy's ass by getting to him and getting him out of there BEFORE Gadaski got to him, because I knew he would hurt him. I failed miserably.

That was, uh, legitimate defense. That's what Rougeau's lawyer (Cookie Lazarus, yes, his name is COOKIE) pleaded and we got innocented.


Other than that, I may have pushed a few barricades into people and I dropped an overshooting flying cross body-ing Stevie Fabulous on 2-3 people's laps, but they were good ol' boys and he weights like 120 pounds, they laughed it off.

At the indy I go to, the wrestlers do a lot of guard rail spots, with the rails often swinging back into the crowd. I have to really pay attention, and also keep an eye out for kids who are standing close, in case I have to grab them away.

One time, someone was doing chops across his opponent's chest, but swinging wildly. I just got my hand up in time, otherwise he would have caught me in the face.

Proper nasty small fed I worked for, New Forest Xtreme (NFX) haD a lot of incompetent boobs working for them (presumably how I kept getting booked), mostly rich kid friends of the rich kid promoter who started the promotion as a plaything (and venue to push drugs from, his other major interest at the time. His current interest us presumably avoiding getting shanked in prison).

Said incompetents would often set the seats way too close to the ring so they could get a close look at the matches. I and several others ended up landing on them a few times. A few bumps and bruises mostly but in one case a fractured eyesocket when a knee (not mine) caught someone flush.

They were very lucky no actual spectators got hurt that way.

Slammiversary 2008 in Memphis (actually Southaven) I was second row and during the King of the Mountain match a ladder fell over the guardrail right at me. Two guys in the first row and myself had to evacuate our seats for a few minutes until they retrieved the ladder for use.

At a BEYOND wrestling event Da Hit Squad almost plowed me by accident. At GCW I've probably saved 3 or 4 people from getting plowed by wrestlers because the fans are either drunk or not paying attention. And I've gotten hurt from flying shards of light tubes. My friend got whacked in the throat. But it was a great time to be had as well

I came close at an Indy event a few years back. I was front row and the wrestlers did a barrier spot and the way they did it, they went through the middle of two of them and they almost folded together, the legs of one of them came a couple of inches from whacking me in the head. Fortunately because of the two large men in the middle of the barriers, they couldn’t close all the way so no harm done.

Also another close call was at a public showing of Wrestlemania 25 and they pulled the plug right before the main event of HBK and Taker which legit started a riot in the place showing it. Someone threw a chair in my direction (Not at me, just in my direction) and it hit the wall above me head..... Good times though

Had a few times while filming that I had to jump back cause someone changed direction fast. Back when Powerslam was running monthly shows at the Pike County Little Theater if you sat front row and someone got thrown out of the ring odds were good they were gonna land on your feet.

I was at ROH in Providence last year and moose got whipped into the guardrail where I was sitting front row and it was like a car driving into my knees honestly. I wasn't really hurt or anything but I felt that for a little bit

I don't have any footage. Stopped working nearly 14 years ago and the shindies I worked weren't big on recording with the technical available at the time.

Only worked for 2 promotions, neithere of which amounted to anything. Wales Coastal (was friends with the promoter and family, they trained me) did seaside towns along the coast here and New Forest Xtreme.

The rest were spot shoes and one offs through others I worked with. You're talking weekend warriors and the lowest level flea markets.

The only thing we ever did worth a damn with NFX is we'd book a show in a town near a decent sized agricultural show or classic car show and then book a tent at that show. Set up the ring and have about 6-8 guys, with a box of cheap masks and singlets. We'd charge entry and all work and load of matches under different masks in different styles with names we came up with on the spot.

Parents brought their bored kids in to watch and while they were there we gave the hard sell for the evening show and sold tickets.

I once took the same hit with Takeshi Morishima doing a dive and hitting the guardrail. I feel your pain.
