So I'm watching this match right now, wanting to watch all the Rumble matches before the PPV. Of course, it's the first time the #1 entry wins the whole match. It's one of the most repeated Rumble finishes ever. On the face of it, this is a really impressive feat. But when you look at the details and even see the match, you really begin to question how impressive it actually is. The biggest name in the match aside from Shawn is Lex Luger. Owen was gone in the blink of an eye. The match itself goes only 38 minutes due to there only being 1 minute between entrants. At that point, guys had lasted 50-60 minutes in the match. Shawn's time maybe wasn't even in the top 5 when it happened. He eliminated 7 people which is good, but other than that, is this the least impressive, impressive accomplishment ever?

I don't care how they paint it. It was a dull Rumble with a dull winner.

I am already biased against HBK in terms of rumbles because I hate skinning the cat spots in most cases.
It often takes entirely too long, usually has other wrestlers just kind of ignoring it or watching them do it and doing nothing.
Plus, it sometimes leads to wrestlers doing them in matches where there are no repercussions to being sent out of the ring. WHY? It's like how, in some Bra and Panties matches in those lame days, women would do pinning spot sequences, but pinning is not a way to win those kinds of matches. It's doing it just to do it.

I love the ending and quite enjoy the randomness of the less than stellar entrants during the Rumble. Did think they failed to follow up with Davey Boy after that Rumble - as he should have got a bit of a push after going so close to the coast to coast victory.. Given all they did was dump him in a team with Luger afterwards, it probably would have made sense to have Luger be the last man with Shawn, especially given he was co-winner the year before.

Wwf and wcw's desire to push Bulldog was mind boggling. He was pretty good but dull as hell and wwf had him feeding with both Diesel and HBK over the title whole he never reply seemed like a viable threat. Also once he cut his dreadlocks he seemed to lose most of his muscle tone and shrink several inches.

Wasn't this the Rumble where both feet have to touch the ground rule was called on air for the first time?
Definitely the weakest Rumble in '80/'90s era. Whole event was setup for that one final spot.

Whole event was setup for that one final spot. It actually wasn't. Ventura had mentioned it as far back as 89. This was just the first time it really came into play, but it was always part of the rule.

Bulldog really has his working boots on that night. It's like he looked at the list of competitors, and thought "oh feck this.."
The 60 second intervals actually do keep the action flowing among the mediocre talents, or bring out new folk before the match has time to breathe. So while bad, it never actually has a chance to get dull.
Duke Droese kills a referee.
Owen Hart is in this far too short. 2 seconds? Historical outrage.
Owen gets eliminated right as Timothy Well comes out. For years as a kid I thought that pop was for Well.
Well is in the ring 10 seconds and f***s up a Flair Flip.
They eliminate 10 guys in 20 seconds!
The love in Vince's voice for Mantaur: he really wanted that gimmick to get over.
When the push comes to shove we've got Shawn, Bulldog, Heavenly Bodies, Fatu, Barbarian, Martel, Owen, Luger, Backlund, Adam Bomb (hey I liked him) and Crush in this. The problem is...Droese, the Blu Brothers, the Bushwackers, Aldo, etc. If ever there was a night to pull double duty, and chuck Razor, Jarrett, IRS, Undertaker, Bigelow, Tatanka and the 123 Kid into the rumble too, it was this night. Then perhaps we'd have got 90 second intervals too...

I know it wasn't a Rumble match, but I liked that Randy Savage was expecting Ricky Steamboat to do the skin-the-cat move and caught him with a clothesline at their Wrestlemania 3 match. As for the 1995 Rumble, it was clearly the HBK/Bulldog show as no one else had a chance that year. I just remember them talking up Luger but he was directionless and lost a ton of momentum from the 1994 Rumble to 1995 and wasn't really factored in as he was on the losing end of a feud with Tatanka.

The ending is well done, even though it makes Davey Boy look dumb for not making sure HBK was out before celebrating, but the shortness of the match takes a lot away from it.

It's an awful rumble. You start with two big stars and then a Blu brother comes in. You then have ten minutes of complete jobbers and lose the will to live. Eventually it comes back to Bulld9g and Michaels and then the other Blu enters and you worry you might have gone back in time and been stuck in a dull groundhog day time loop.

That's literally all I remember from that Rumble. I remember watching this as a 14 year old HBK fan and screaming at the TV in outrage that f***ing Bulldog put him out. Ha. It’d be nice to have that passion for wrestling again. Sigh.

I couldn’t get PPV at home for free anymore, so my grandparents got this PPV for me. My grandpa said at the end “Phonier than a $4 bill!”
