Pretty much. Everyone involved not named Terry Funk seems pretty baffled whenever they go over that period in history. Terry himself has never adequately explained it either, from what I've seen.

It was Terry Funk doing a gimmick in tribute to a childhood friend who had recently died. Chainsaw Charlie is what they called the local barber as a joke. This is all from what Prichard said on STWW btw. As Bruce told the story Terry said "It's Chainsaw Charlie. Everyone will know it's Terry Funk but he's middle aged and crazy." The run wasn't supposed to last long so they just said OK.

I remember vaguely hearing a story about once when he was using the chainsaw on the ringpost to make sparks fly, but the chainsaw wouldn't start up. He kept pulling it and gasoline was getting everywhere, but he continued because "I'm F***ING CHAINSAW CHARLIE, DAMNIT!"
