I noticed that pretty much every comedy currently on ABC is about families. The Middle, The Goldbergs, Fresh off the Boat, Black-Ish, Modern Family, Speechless, and American Housewife are all sitcoms about families. I mean, I enjoy a lot of those shows (in paticular, American Housewife, just jumped on this season and it's hilarious) but why not try some other premise? (I seriously miss Better Off Ted)

(I seriously miss Better Off Ted) No idea, but also gotta remember Roseanne is returning to ABC in late March. That's another family based sitcom. Seems like lately most of the sitcoms are family based or work based. Kind of like how most dramas on the OTA networks are either Lawyer,Cop,or Medical based.

Might have something to do with ABC’s parent company, which also caters to families. You know, a little organization called Disney?

I mean, those are all very different shows that happen to be about a family.

Families tend to be a very popular topic for sitcoms in general, but I think ABC is just especially comfortable with the topic, like CBS with "unlikable f***wit" sitcoms.

ABC tried doing sitcoms about single people a few years ago (in the 2000s between TGIF and Modern FAmiy), when they somehow became the lowest rated network for situational comedies. I think they learned to stick with what works.

Oddly enough, in the mid 90s ABC tried to get away from family comedies, cancelling the underrated "Me & The Boys" starring Steve Harvey

On a side note, there was a time in the 90s when almost every ABC family sitcom had the characters go to Disney World (or Disneyland). Heck, even the Middle and Modern Family did it this decade, and I wouldnt be surprised if Speechless, Black-ish, and American Housewife do it too eventually (Goldbergs and Fresh off the Boat wont be able to due to the fact that they're set in the 80s and 90s respectively).

It would be easier for Fresh off the Boat to do it. Being set in 95,iirc this season, and being in Orlando.

Oh yeah...then it wouldn't parody an 80s movie/TV show.

No, Goldbergs couldnt do it since a good chunk of the attractions have either been massively overhauled (Pirates of the Caribbean anyone?) or are no longer around (Mr. Toads Wild Ride), which wouldnt mix with the 80s setting (and then you have the changes to Epcot which doesnt look anything like it did in the 80s).

Thats what I was thinking. DW and Epcot haven't changed as much from 95 as they have from 1980 something.
