So what was the kayfabe/real life explanation of the Owen Hart switch?

His wife had just given birth. Owen actually mentioned it on Action Zone a few weeks later.
He worked Raw the next night to lose the titles to the Smoking Gunns, then was allowed to go home and miss the Tuesday Superstars taping.

But what I don't quite get is that Owen couldn't make it to the match but could somehow make it to the end of the match? Like, was the hospital close by but still sort of far away?
