People seem to forget that everyone got easily offended back then too.
The Walking Dead is a good example of something that in no way would have aired like in the 90s and before. Its surprising how far tv gore has progressed. And sex that borderline on softcore.
Same with Breaking Bad.
Other examples?

I could see both shows you mentioned getting air time on HBO back in the day. Look at what Tales from the Crypt got away with.

On hbo but not basic cable. Hell, even Tales from the crypt wasnt as gory as TWD is. Things have come a long way.

Back in the late 90s, lots of cable channels started with experimenting with showing nudity and using foul language, especially MTV, so most shows would have at least a shot of being shown. That said, The Real Housewives Of...franchise wouldn't have been shown because it probably would have bombed.

We've made such progress in recent years - as slow as it sometimes seems - when you consider the backlash that The Ellen Show got just 20 years ago. Laura Dern had her career stalled, Ellen had her show boycotted, taken off the air in some states, cancelled after another season, all in addition to the studio getting bomb threats. All because some people didn't like the idea of an LGBT character that wasn't an offensive stereotype.
Can you imagine how they'd react to the idea of a character like Korra? A bisexual woman of colour as the main character, with a canon girlfriend and a romantic conclusion, in an animated show on a children's network? If the creators had put something like that out in the early 90s, everyone involved probably would have never been able to work again.

A show with undertones of homosexuality, transgenderism, polygamy, abusive relationships and even rape? And it's a kids cartoon show? Even the excuse of 'They're just alien space rocks' wouldn't have gotten it past an unaired pilot episode any more than ten years ago.

I'm surprised at some of the gore that showed up as "incident re-creation footage" in CSI and it's spawn, that would never fly on network TV in the 80s.

Even if Breaking Bad aired on 90s-era cable TV, I bet it'd be saddled with complaints.

I can’t imagine any network wanting to touch It’s Always Sunny... back in the day.

I echo Walking Dead. I'm actually often surprised at how graphic it can get. But I guess kids have more access to such content these days? GOT, from what I gather, all the sex, violence, nudity, rape etc.

Could see it happening, but they’d excise all the violence and sex and force them to do it on a tiny budget. Would have sucked.

I can't imagine Will and Grace or Modern Family being able to exist any year before 1990.

Not for reasons of content, but any show with a continuing storyline. It was rare to see those in the 80s and even the 90s (Twin Peaks notwithstanding) yet now almost every show has to have every episode be important to the story.

Pretty much as soon as it was published, George R. R. Martin was getting offers to do a movie or series, he held out till he found people who he thought would do it justice.

I can't see the Eric Andre show working in like 1996. He and Hannibal were like 13.

I don't see TV executives taking a risk on shows like Friendship Is Magic or DC Superhero Girls in the 1990's. I imagine their mentality would be "oh, they're too much of a niche market." Orange Is The New Black or RuPaul's Drag Race would have likely too risky for them as well.

There is nothing to stop it from existing int he 90's(excluding the quality). It would probably be one of the safest bets.
