I have a question, but I don't want to derail the Enzo thread.
While reading through the multitude of tweets connected to this, I noticed that deceased rapper Lil Peep is mentioned a lot. "I wish Lil Peep was here," "I miss Lil Peep so much," "I miss Lil Peep extra... I feel like crying," etc. It reminds of the "RIP Kurt/Tupac/Biggie" stuff that went around in the 90s. It makes it seem like this guy was a once in a generation talent that left too soon.
Here's the thing, though: The only reason I know of him at all is because he died young. Yes, I'm a not a hip hop girl. That said, I'm still at least a little familiar with the Kendrick Lamars and Migoses of the world. But this guy? No clue. And the little I have heard... Let's just say that I'm not impressed.
Look: I'm not trying to mock "the young people" for their musical choices. (My generation had Vanilla Ice at the beginning of the decade and Limp Bizkit at the end. We have no moral high ground here.) I'm just trying to figure out why a guy who is apparently so beloved managed to be so invisible.

Never heard of the guy until he passed away. I'm not a huge fan of hip hop and rap, but if he was somewhat good I think I would have heard his music.

Sound cloud rappers aren't famous and tmz's definition of fame is questionable now.

Why is everyone "Lil'" now? I swear, the only thing lazier than a lot of the music they're putting out is what these newer rappers are naming themselves.

He was semi-famous but dying put him on a lot more radars than he was on alive.

Didn't know of him until he died. Even now, I know him by all the "Lil" memes on Facebook. I've yet to even hear a second of any of his raps.

He was pretty well known.
Kendrick, Migos etc. are at the very top tier of rap superstars right now so it's not really fair to compare them, but Lil Peep was at the very least where Chance the Rapper was in 2013 when he began his rise.

Sometimes, what makes people notable is dying young. It turns them into a tragic figure, and a lot of the people who are into him are either moved by wasted potential, cared for him in life, or see themselves or others like them having shared his fate under different circumstances. That can be very captivating to a lot of people.
(Personally, not all that aware of the guy and his music, but I understand the fascination people have with people in these sorts of circumstances.)

Yeah, I'd say this is pretty accurate. I hadn't listened to his music, but I knew who he was before he died and was super shocked to hear that he passed at such a ridiculously young age too.

Lil Peep was probably the most visible rapper for a while who was mixing an emo rock-friendly sound with contemporary hip hop. The music he made wasn't as rich or melodic as artists like Kendrick, but he was getting better. For someone so young, he did have something to him I found interesting.
His passing was tragic either way, but it's a shame we won't get to see him develop further. Depression is no joke.
I always thought "Awful Things" was false advertising, it's actually kinda catchy.

I never heard of him before he passed away either but I decided to check out the song Awful Things just now and it's not bad at all. It's not really rap though. So then I checked out Save That Shit and The Brightside and thy're not bad either but it's still not really as "rappy" as I expected. It reminds me of one of my favourite current rappers 'BONES' but with singing. But I'm old and my idea of rap or hip-hop is probably totally different from what it is today.
Still, sad to see a person died at such a young age.

I know Chance the Rapper (well, his hosting stint on SNL) and I've heard of Kendrick Lamar. No idea who Lil Peep is.

OK, so you know of Chance not through having the biggest rap release of 2016, but through his hosting of a television show and you otherwise know the artist behind the most critically acclaimed album of the last year, but have no idea who one of the emerging voices who was sadly extinguished at the very start of his trajectory was. Got it.

Peep wasn't quite there yet, though he could have been.

Got it. Peep was not anywhere near Chance level right now. Let’s slow that down

His name is known from the people who follow the rap game but he’s not something casuals would know. Chance has become more household over the last year through the numerous TV appearances and critical acclaim
