OK, so you know of Chance not through having the biggest rap release of 2016, but through his hosting of a television show and you otherwise know the artist behind the most critically acclaimed album of the last year, but have no idea who one of the emerging voices who was sadly extinguished at the very start of his trajectory was. Got it. Eh, Peep was getting pretty big, but it's not fair to compare him to how massive Chance is now. I can imagine anybody on the street being aware of Chance today. Peep wasn't quite there yet, though he could have been. Until I read this thread I had no clue who Peep or Chance were/are.

Chance....rhymes with pants

I know Chance the Rapper (well, his hosting stint on SNL) and I've heard of Kendrick Lamar. No idea who Lil Peep is. Got it. Dude, we get it. Rap is your thing, and that's perfectly fine. But don't get upset and snarky if other people don't follow it as much as you do.

Well some people would not know who Chance is just off a point as he's still becoming more mainstream If you watch TV he was doing the Kit Katt commercials

He was pretty well known. Kendrick, Migos etc. are at the very top tier of rap superstars right now so it's not really fair to compare them, but Lil Peep was at the very least where Chance the Rapper was in 2013 when he began his rise. No way. Back in 2013 Chance had already dropped Acid Rap which was a big, national project. I had heard of him organically. I am very up on current hip hop, Lil Peep was not someone who I had heard of until he died. I listened to his music after he died out of curiosity, I honestly don’t see how people enjoyed that.

Times have changed and how people consume media has changed. The internet has opened up music scenes that would have been insular and limited in the past to wider audiences. They reach more people and gain more of a following even without getting 'hits' and chart exposure because they distribute their music in a different way. So, when Peep died, it impacted a lot of people, enough for you to notice it without ever having heard of him.

I saw Chance open up for Childish Gambino in 2012, and his setlist was so small he covered a Gambino song

I saw Peep, at the time of his death, was where Chance was in 2013, as 'Acid Rap' was breaking through.

I want to apologize to Surfer Sandman . I mistook him quoting my post before his response as suggesting that somehow Chance wasn't famous for rap and thus neither was Peep because he never heard of them. I was on edge and should have re-read it before I posted. I'm genuinely sorry.

What channels of hip-hop are you following? 'Acid Rap' was a sleeper success that gained momentum but was by no means "National" or "mainstream" in any sort of way. Peep had the same sort of momentum. "Benz Truck" was hitting on the same level as Chance's "Juice."

I only heard of him before he died from Pitchfork hyping him up as the second coming. Doesn’t look like my kind of thing.

I have seen other claims that Lil Peep was on the verge of blowing up, but I feel this is hindsight after he died. I am sure he had his core, niche audience, but he was not the next big thing. Chance The Rapper was much more well known in 2013 than Lil Peep at the time he died. There is no way to really measure this other than the eye test, and the comparison doesn’t pass the eye test for me. I would maybe compare him to a drill artist from around that time- a more popular representative of a super niche version of hip hop that has a loyal passionate fanbase, but not something that will ever reach the masses.

What is the eye-test? Because in terms of views, plays, live attendance, coverage, etc., "Benz Truck" was a "Juice."

The eye test basically means making a decision based on what you have seen and experienced for yourself. Like someone could tell you so and so is the best quarterback ever based on stats, but you don’t agree based on the eye test- you saw him play and you don’t agree he is the best ever. That is what I am saying here- I was very aware of Chance in 2013. I am not even a hug fan of Chance NOW, but his buzz then and the buzz Lil Peep had are not the same. Chance was much more well known in my opinion. I guess I could be wrong, but I just don’t think that is giving Peep a lot of credit.
