Yes, I am considering joining the doomsday cult. I hate to admit it. But I’ve had a Planet Fitness membership for months now and am not really using it much. Maybe its depression or maybe its a symptom of just reaching a certain age, but I find motivation to work out alone harder to come by and I think I need a group environment to help me get off my increasingly fat ass. Plus the dynamic workouts are interesting to me although I don’t doubt I would struggle at first for how out of shape I am. Heaven help my soul.

A.) Yes, there is totally an insane element to some Crossfitology circles. You are not wrong to be apprehensive.
B.) However, having a motivator is what some people need. That I believe is the spirit of what birthed the whole thing in the first place.
You want to try and convince me to work on a day I wasn't going to yet have no real reason I couldn't? Respect it.
You want to imbed yourself in my life like your importance is beyond that of a gym bro? What? f*** you. This ain't Jonestown. Let me advance at my level.
That reminds me of a stupid joke I made once. You know Wiifit? It was my idea for that type of thing, only it was WiiRIPPED.
You don't merely track your progress and try. It's in charge, not you.
*You turn it on* "FIFTY PUSHUPS."
"I don't know, Wii. I was kinda gonna take it easy and play Breath of the Wild with my kids this weekend."
"Your fitness level is shit. You WILL give me fifty pushups."

If you're worried about it's difficulty starting off, maybe you could join a regular exercise class for a few months before graduating to the Church of Crossfitology? That way you'd get the group environment and motivation you're looking for without jumping right into the deep end.

I work as a physical therapist. I'll just say I get a lot more crossfitters than Zumbaers or cyclists in my clinic.
Obviously, they're not all bad, but it's definitely something you have to gbe careful about.

Well your first step, regardless if you do crossfit, is to immediately cancel your Planet Fitness gym membership. And if possible, burn the gym down.

You got the first step down perfectly: Talking about Crossfit.

Five or six people at my office are into Crossfit. So I second hand hear a lot about Crossfit every day.
I don't really get the appeal any more than any other fitness program; not knockin it, don't know much about it. I just can't see talkin about any exercise program daily.

That's another thing I second hand here a lot: some of them talking about their back/arms/legs whatever hurting at least once a week. I always think: "You're not supposed to be actually hurting yourself."

It's a daily struggle fr me to try to break that "No pain, no gain" notion and educate people about the difference between soreness and pain. Crossfit can be fine if there's a good gym and a good coach, but often times form and safety get sacrificed for numbers and speed and that's just dangerous.

Yeah, that's what I've heard is that proper form just goes right out the window in a lot of these places. And like you said, there's a differenc between soreness and injury

You might, but Crossfit is not 'intro to fitness' So if you are not really in the mode of working out this may not work.

The Olympic lifts are incredibly technical, and not intended for high reps. That perfect storm is dangerous for even trained lifters. Now introduce thousands of laymen doing it, and who is training them?
