I'd say Kevin Smith. While he does a great job of doing the "I'm an outsider who's just lucky to be able to do this" image. He uses so much insider lingo, it always feels like he's selling his image rather than it being completely genuine. Not to say he's not cool, as I've heard a lot of great stories about him, but I think he realizes that being the outsider to Hollywood is his brand now, and he IS Hollywood these days. I don't get that at all. I think he just smokes so much weed now that he honestly doesn't care, so he gets involved in projects that are fun to him. Listening to his podcasts, that's what I gather anyway. Smoking has made him see that life isn't as serious as you're made to believe it should be. It's also made his projects suck. That or there's no correlation and it's just aging but... Id say Daniel Day Lewis. Method acting....is beneficial to some. And I don't discredit it entirely but I've worked with people who try to keep character all the time, and it's just hokey as f***.

You want to talk carny actors, and I'd look to things like that time Joaquin Phoenix decided to grow a beard and act all bizarre, or pretty much everything Shia LeBeouf has been doing for the last few years.

No. But it doesn't make that kind of behavior any less cringeworthy and weird in my opinion.

I just think there's a lot of insecurity/mental issues that are par for the course when it comes to actors....Joaquin seemed to level out and has put out some great work. While Shia, despite seemingly having a strong drive when he was younger, has a lot of issues.

I used to be a pretty big View Askew fan and I still think a lot of his early oeuvre stands up, but man, when Kevin Smith fell in love with weed, that was kinda it for me in terms of interest. I used to listen to SModcast, but when he started to be just completely baked for every show, it became unlistenable. And I haven’t watched any of his movies past Clerks II. I’m not gonna shit on the guy for doing stuff he loves, but it’s just no longer for me.
