Not talking about full-on con men, but those with carnie qualities.
Like Jesse Owens who used to make money racing horses after he got black balled from mainstream competition for accepting endorsement deals. He even had a system where he picked out horses who would get spooked by the sound of the racing gun to give Owens an advatange.

I think pretty much anyone who became famous via a reality show, then tries to maintain that fame by keeping their name in the tabloids qualifies.

I think the fact "Celebrity Boxing" was ever a thing is a fine example of being carnie and just how desperate for attention these fallen stars can get.
Those type of shenanigans are why it's always nice to see people behave rationally who just simply bow out when their fifteen is up.

In his later life where he was at his worse with alcoholism, HOF pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander had to take a role in a flea circus. Pretty sad.

I think Jeff Jarrett fits the bill pretty well. Not just the fact that he comes from wrestling (which has an inherent carny background), but that he tried hocking gold in that painfully obvious pyramid scheme.

Alex Jones has admitted in court that his entire shtick is an act and his show is basically a series of infomercials for products he sells.

What's nutty about that is there are still people who view him as a beacon of truth and go all in on every single one of his conspiracy theories even with that being common knowledge.

Penn Jillette always refers to himself as “carnie trash”.

I'd go for Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The man had 1 skill, being a bodybuilder, and a limited grasp of English, hustled it into being one of the biggest actors of all time, despite never being that good, then somehow goes into politics and winds up governor of California somehow.

Stan Lee. Between how much of others' work he got credit for because of his skills as a hype man, and how much he charges on the con circuit for three seconds in his presence...
