Seeing this guy beat Roman clean and then becoming the first Universal Champion. Anyone know what the end game was?

Probably to defend the championship and make it look good?

Probably to defend the championship and make it look good? This is WWE we are talking about, that can't possibly be the case.

He'd have lost it to Reigns, and they'd talk about how Finn was "almost there".

It probably still leads to the Kevin Owens reign and him being the chosen one, but it happens a month or two later than it did. Like, similar situation, FB defending it in a 4-way with KO, Seth Rollins and someone else.

He was probably losing at the Rumble. I know he was scheduled to face Owens and then Owens and Jericho in a triple threat so a Rumble loss makes sense. At the end of the day he was just going to be there until they can find a way to sling it back to Lesnar and Reigns.

That is a good question. You'd think all roads would lead to Brock/Roman since that was talked about all the way back to WM32 but I think Jericho said he was supposed to beat Owens for the title at WM33 until Goldberg came in. They could have had Roman/Brock at 33 but that then leaves Taker, Owens, and Jericho out. Could have done Cena/Taker last year but then they lose the mainstream moment of John's wedding proposal and that match.
Man, that one moment made a major impact on WM.

According to Meltzer, before Roman got suspended the title matches at Summerslam were going to be Reigns/Rollins for the World title and Cena/Styles for the Universal title. So if Balor was basically thrown into that position I wouldn't be shocked if WWE themselves weren't complete sure what the end game was.
Maybe Rollins stays heel for longer and eventually gets the title. Rollins winning the title as a heel in December or January, Triple H turning on him (like when Orton won the WHC in Evolution) and Rollins successfully defending the title against Triple H at Wrestlemania seems like a plausible scenario.

I would be willing to bet a large amount of money that they had no definitive endgame. Maybe an idea that was ping-pong’ed around before it happened, but I’d bet anything they had no glued-on endgame. Not just cynicism talking. That’s the way the company is being run.

Like, similar situation, FB defending it in a 4-way with KO, Seth Rollins and someone else. The only thing is, nearly all of Kevin Owen's run felt like they were in a holding pattern because of the Balor injury. That they hadn't had a plan B and even months later still hadn't come up with one.

Supposedly the JeriKO / Rollins feud was what Balor was supposed to be doing, so I presume Owens would have won the belt around December to transition it to Goldberg.

So Ambrose wasn't supposed to cash in MITB so soon?

Probably lose to a returning Roman Reigns who Vince would totally forgive. Funny, if Daniel Bryan had the most monster push in a decade and f***ed up like that, I can't imagine he'd be forgiven. Reigns though? Oh, water under the bridge. Made his mistake and paid his price. Back to this inorganic loathed monster push. Just absolute bullshit.
