Jim Cornette started as a ring photographer. He moved on to a bunch of odd jobs, such as ring announcing, time keeper, magazine and pr work, etc before becoming a manager.

Wasn't he a trainee they had setting up the ring as part of paying his dues? He started out as a member of the ring crew, got into training later. [/quote] Cool, didnt know that

Terri Runnels started out as a makeup artist before becoming a manager in WCW. She was a makeup artist on tv shows like Larry King. I don't know if she worked for WCW. And nobody's said Just Joe yet? 😁

Zeb Colter? Granted he was a performer before, but wasn't he a producer or road agent before coming back to manager Swagger? I wouldn't count him. There are literally hundreds of former workers that went backstage and came back later for whatever reason (Johnny Ace, Ricky Steamboat, Brisco, Patterson, Slaughter, etc). This question seems aimed at those that weren't ever wrestlers, refs or any other on-screen performer role before getting having their backstage role turn into an on-screen role. Jim Cornette started as a ring photographer. He moved on to a bunch of odd jobs, such as ring announcing, time keeper, magazine and pr work, etc before becoming a manager. Heyman started the same way, as a photojournalist (and his very first professional job was getting paid by the WWWF for some of the photos he took for them), and then he became a promoter, hosting wrestling shows at Studio 54. He wouldn't start as an on-screen manager for another two years. Never worked backstage anywhere that I'm aware of. Was a wrestler and referee before her WWF stint, and she was only on-screen talent during that stint.

Referee Jimmy Korderas who was a driver, ring crew and do all shit jobs man before becoming a on-screen referee. I think most refs double as ring crew. I remember staying super late after a house show and Charles Robinson and a few other refs were tearing down the ring.

Ed Ferrara (though it should be noted he originally started as an indy worker briefly) Dixie Carter Linda McMahon (can't count the rest of the family - Vince started as an on-air announcer, Shane started a ref and Steph started as a performer all before starting real backstage duties) Maybe Harvey Wippleman? (wasn't he like the WWE backstage gofer guy?) No, he was a manager from the Memphis territory when he started with WWF as a manager; the backstage thing didn't come until later for him. Don't know about Shane, but Stephanie used to model shirts in the merchandise catalog as a kid, so I'd count her. Think I heard she used to answer phones around the office during her summers off from school too.

I will make the (potentially flimsy) case that Howard Finkel should be on this list. As iconic as it was, his ring announcing was barely a "performance," more a procedural duty, and he was a huge part of the backstage operation. I don't think anyone envisioned him becoming a part of skits and dumb mini-angles. I'll sign off on this. You make a good point. Would Jim Ross count when he started as a driver for McGuirk? Or was he already a referee?
