Man, this booking in the fall/winter of 2004-05 was fantastic. But when do you think Batista knew the moment was made up he would betray Triple H? The backstage promos with him hyping up Triple H, his strategy, the faking out and eventual turn during the contract signing. This was brilliant booking from beginning to end.
Was it when Evolution turned on Orton? When Batista won the Rumble? Even before that, you could sense Batista was already plotting to get that shiny golden belt away from HHH when the moment was right.
Kudos to whoever booked it.

It was an excellent storyline from start to finish, I think it started on the go-home edition of Raw before Survivor Series 04 where Batista held the World Title for a moment and stared at it after HHH left the locker room for a moment.

Ive actually been watching the buildup to WM21 on the network. I fully believe the moment Batista knew he was turning on Hunter was at the end of Raw in Tokyo. He helped HHH defeat Edge and as he’s raising Hunter’s arm Batista just stared at the WHC.

By far the best HHH feud post Attitude Era, and for once it actually helped the person he was feuding with.

I don't know about anyone else but I think it was when Triple H and Batista made that bet. They bet that whoever beats their opponent in the quickest time gets $100 from the loser. Batista ended up winning so the next week there was a backstage segment talking about the Elimination Chamber match which was happening that upcoming Sunday. Batista brought up the fact that Trips didn't give him his money so he was asking for it. The entire time Trips was getting pissed more and more, he even asked Flair to give Batista the money but Batista went against that and said "you made the bet, not him, I want YOUR MONEY" and then Trips reluctantly gave the money up.
Batista then said he was f***ing around and he didn't want his money, he was just kidding. That segment plant the seeds for the Chamber match but more importantly it showed Batista opposing himself on Triple H and eventually overpowering him. It was foreshadowing when Batista decided he would take something Triple H cared about more, the world title. If Trips took a while to give up 100 bucks, just imagine what he'd do to keep the belt.
Batista's rise is one of the best wrestling stories in the WWE during the 00s and I'll debate anyone who disagrees with that. It was perfect.

When they had that fake falling out, but at the end of it Trips said to Bats “you could’ve at least won the match” or something like that, then Bats gave him the death stare.
I was so pissed at that fake out, worth it in the end though.
Another question, what if he didn’t win the Rumble? When would he have turned?

Back in the early 70s when Leviathan was still in his larval stage he had an epipheny. He saw it all, the Powerplant, Sarge, OVW, Cornette rolling his eyes at this hoss who would surely amount to nothing, his conversion to the church of D'Von which would civilise the river monster into a functioning member of society, Evolution, the contra code title shots, Rey supposing to be his friend, MMA, movies, Bluetista, a million unfunny youshoot questions by people who don't know when to leave a bad joke buried in the past, everything.
From that stage Lil Leviathan knew. He knew he'd give Hunter the thumbs down. He just had to play the waiting game.

It goes to show you that story sells matches.
I thought this was great, people can say it's predictable, but good storytelling should have a level of predictability. That's what makes it good, knowing how it's going to end, therefore you buy the PPV to experience that moment.
Batista was an awesome babyface that unfortunately was shuffled to Smackdown too soon, and then had some unfortunate injury setbacks, which in turn hurt his long term appeal. It would be interesting to see how history plays out had he stayed on Raw and not been plagued with so many injuries.

Am I the only one who loved the fact each and every time, Batista always outsmarted Triple H. It was nice to see HHH as a goof heel for a change. When he wants to, he can be great. Batista really does owe Triple H a lot.

As terrible as Orton's face turn was, that it gave them a perfect example of what to avoid when it came to the Batista turn is a real silver lining.
And as said, it worked out great for Batista. Hunter gave him hell in each match but still put him over 3 PPVs in a row, and it really made Batista. More of that and no-one would've complained about HHH as much.

The segment where HHH and Flair are plotting and talking about how they hope Batista goes to Smackdown instead... only for the camera to pull back and reveal Batista was listening in on them the whole time was a really well done segment.

This wasn't it but I loved the Chamber build when Triple H reprimanded Batista for beating Rhyno too fast in the Beat the Clock challenge and Batista just said "he pissed me off."

Batista was brute at the end of the day while Orton was groomed as being the next HHH. Orton got cocky and was outsmarted and ended up being kicked out. The key is that Batista was learning as well, HHH and Flair didn't see him more than a brute and that was their downfall. You basically gave the monster knowledge and he wrecked shop. That's genius. I wish we had a great rise like that these days.

According to Bruce Prichard, Vince wanted the Batista/HHH thing to happen on a random RAW, and HHH said no and that it needed to be built to WM. If true, yet another example of the senile old man being an absolute creative cancer...

If true, yet another example of the senile old man being an absolute creative cancer... People can hate the Kliq and Triple H all they want... But every story I hear about them talking creatively with Vince, the more it sounds like they have an understanding of how good story telling works. Vince never wanted Shawn as a World Champion until 1995, Diesel realized his character sucked as a Face, Razor Ramon was lucky Vince never had seen Scarface, and Triple H seems like he gets how storytelling works.

Hopefully when he saw them bungle the Orton storyline so badly. At least they got it right with him.

Such a great time too. After losing the tite to Batista it would be 2.5 years before Triple H won a World Title again. So refreshing after 3 years of him being around the WWE/World Heavyweight titles and the reign of terror.

So refreshing after 3 years of him being around the WWE/World Heavyweight titles and the reign of terror. Also, his title reign was like an hour long. So he pretty much didn't have the title for 3 years.
