Judging the responses the WWE killed it with HBK's 1996 run. His babyface shtick comes off as being so phony now (a lot of that may have to do with knowing how he was behind the scenes though), but those matches? Especially the Mankind one at Mind Games, ending aside? Holy shit, man. My other favorites then were Taker and Bret.

Stopped watching regularly but I suppose Jericho and Undertaker in these years because I wasn't interested in wrestling in general but missed watching those two.

Okay this is a great topic.
My opinions change so often z I've decided to do one for the start of the year and one for the end.
2001- Chris Jericho/RVD Rock and Austin were already multi-time world champions by this point so I chose the next top guy to get behind. Then the Alliance invaded and RVD just blew me away with his offence and cocky heel character. Angle and Austin were also amazing this year.
2002- Kurt Angle/Matt Hardy RVD seemingly got buried the moment HHH returned and saddled with a bloody Goldust feud of all things and Jericho was booked like a coward so Kurt Angle was probably my favourite with his matches against Edge, Rey and Cena being highlights of the first half of 2002.in the second half of the year I was a complete MFer. The Version 1 gimmick with the incredible entrance was amazing. I thought Matt was going to be a top star for sure.
2003- Chris Benoit/Eddie Guerrero I was a complete Benoit mark right up until his death and his work in the later half of 2002 with and against Angle was incredible. His match at the Rumble is a GOATC. In the Autumn I was completely on board with his lie, cheat and steal gimmick. It was hilarious.
2004- John Cena/Shelton Benjamin The guy was incredible and his MITB performance and upset win over HHH led to me to think he was going to be a massive star. From the second half of 03 and first half of 04 however my favourite was John Cena. Cena's raps were hilarious and he was actually very cool such is hilarious seeing as he's about as hip as a Happy Meal toy right now. My friends and I were doing his hand gesture all round the college campus. We were also so excited by him that we turned up the volume during his entrance in the 04 Rumble. Yes it was because we expected a rap but it was also because there was a very real sense of excitement around him.
2005- Christian/Petey Williams He'd lost Trish way too soon but even without her I still thought he was pure gold and had star quality written all over him. His new theme song was amazing and it looked like he was going to smash the glass ceiling. I got into TNA as I was desperate for an alternative to WWE at the time and Petey Williams with his Canadian Destroyer instantly made him my favourite.
2006- AJ Styles/Samoa Joe With Eddie dying and his death bring abused by the WWE, John Cena having his overnight character change she Christian but getting the push he needed in addition to Jericho leaving I defected to TNA in late 2005. AJ Styles and Joe had an incredible match in an X Cup tournament final for the right to face Christopher Daniels and it was incredible. Daniels would then get involved to make this feud legendary but since I'm only choosing two I'm going for Joe and Styles.
2007- Motor City Machine Guns & LAX Alex Shelly was instantly unique and intriguing to be the minute I got into TNA and became really amazing when he teamed with Kevin Nash to form Paparazi Productions in 06 and this team was even better. Sabin hadn't really done much for me until here. He was just kind of a hairy caveman looking fella but I loved him as soon as this team formed. LAX just had an awesome entrance a fantastic mouthpiece in Konan and just seemed dangerous.
2008- Jeff Hardy and Chris Jericho I got bored of TNA (too bad as I love Kong) and wrestling in general in 2008 but I did watch the weeks leading up, to the Rumble and was fully invested in the Jeff Hardy push. I returned for Punk's title win but hung around for heel Chris Jerico and his feud with HBK.
2009- CM Punk and Desmond Wolf After an awful 2008 both companies were on great form, well Smackdown 09 anyway. Punk's heel turn on Jeff was expertly booked and Desmond Wolf burst into TNA like a freight train. This was the last year I watched TNA as I was massively into Shimmer for the next few years after being sick of WWE's treatment of women and intrigued by Shimmer alumni like Kong, Phoenix and Natalya.
2010- MsChif and The Canadian Ninjas MsChif vs Amazing Kong got me into womens wrestling and its still one of the best matches I've ever seen so when I started my Shimmer collection MsChif was champion and already my favourite. However it was Portia Frickin Perez and Nicole Matthews who very quickly overtook them. Matthews proved she could go with the awesome matches with Haze and Perez is one of the greatest heels of all time and her promo on a WWE-fired Serena Deeb where she hilarious claimed the computer as her own? Golden.
2011- CM Punk & Cheerleader Melissa The second Summer of Punk and Melissa finally winning the big one.
2012- Athena/Ember Moon & Kana/Asuka Long before they were fighting in NXT Ember Moon and Asuka were two of my most beloved wrestlers in Shimmer. Athena had just turned face and was briefly an incredible badass tweener while Kana was as awesome ever.
2013- The Shield & Daniel Bryan 2013 was the year I flew out to watch Shimmer from the UK to see my 2013 female favourites like Madison Eagles, The Ninjas, Luisto and The Global Green Gangsters but my favourite thing in 2013 were the incredible matches of The Shield and their rivalry with Daniel Bryan who then fought back against the bad booking of the WWE.
2014- Madison Eagles and Hikuru Shida There could have been a few contenders here. Luisto was my favourite from the tapings I went to in 13 but they completely botched her push in 14 and didn't give her the belt. I was sushi happened by Shimmer getting really bad at wrestling DVDs around this point so I haven't seen the culmination of the Eagles vs Matthews feud sadly. Eagles around this time though was best in the world and Hikuru Shida looked like an absolute star and total babe.
2014- Evie/Dakota Kai & Becky Lynch Evie is another woman who I think has so much star quality and I've been a huge fan of Becky since I got into Shimmer in 2009 with her matches with Haze and Danger so I was so excited to see her come out of retirement.
2015- Sasha Banks & Fenix The WWE had slowly won me over by signing SShimmer alumni and booking women well but it was the non-Shimmer girl Banks who became my favourite. She's perfect as a heel and needs to be one again soon. My interest in WWE wained again though when I discovered Lucha Underground and I've next looked back. Fenix thanks to Grave Consequences was my favourite.
2016- Fenix & Pentagon Jr After my voyage from the UK to Chicago in 13 I decided I had enough confidence to try travelling to Australia for a year in late 2015. I duct have enough time to follow much wrestling but I never miss the hour of Lucha Underground. Pentagon Jr ended season one and started season 2 as THE MAN and was incredible but I was also still so invested in Fenix's mission to destroy Mill Muertes and became LU champion.
2017- Johnny Mundo & Prince Puma After Australia and then six weeks in Asia I got the bug to travel again so I went away to NZ for a year, but I again never missed LU. Prince Puma's year was hurt by him being a whining twat trying to get out of his contract but his ring work is still easily the best in the world. Johnny Mundo evolved his character so much and perfects the douchebag so well. He really is the mayor of slamtown.

1999: Sting. Sting is the person who got me into wrestling. 2000: Mick Foley. I saw so much of myself in him, I identified with him and I learned a lot from his books. 2001: Jericho was my dude. 2002-2006: I stopped watching during this time. 2007: Rob Van Dam, one of the last guys left that I'd been watching since the 90s. 2008: Kennedy (I was one of the poor saps who thought he'd be the next Stone Cold) 2009: Jericho (best work of his f***ing career was as a heel during this time) 2010: Douchetista was just the best thing. 2011: CM Punk, but then, who wasn't saying that at this time? 2012: The Rock. I was marking out too much for his return. 2013: Ryback. I was desperate for them to pull the trigger on him. 2014: Daniel Bryan. One of the most over wrestlers I've ever seen. 2015: Sting. Felt like a kid again 2016: Kevin Owens. He got to do things nobody else was allowed to do. 2017: Nakamura. I'd never seen anything like him. Still haven't. 2018: Nakamura
