I think Zoe Saldana was Neytiri, right? I don't recall the main dude's name at all. Yes, it is kinda like Dances With Smurfs but I also think it owes more than a little to Dune. As far as fatigue goes, nah. Fatigue means it has been overexposed and constantly everywhere, which Avatar really hasn't been in the past few years. It's more like people forgot about it and no one cares anymore.
I remember telling some people at U of L in early 2010 that Avatar wasn't even the first or second best sci-fi movie of 2009, that District 9 and Star Trek were both easily better movies. They thought I was insane. Want to revisit that debate?
That said, that movie certainly had something going for it. I actually traveled to Newport (N. KY/Cincy area) to see it in IMAX 3D since the IMAX 3D screen at Stonybrook here in Louisville for some reason didn't fit the ratio or something. So friggin Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey played to an empty theater for weeks while they missed out on all that Avatar IMAX money. For what it is worth I didn't even think it was that amazing in IMAX 3D. I certainly thought Beowulf was more interesting and made better use of that format (though Beowulf is not much at home on TV). The theater was ultra hot too, which made it a strain to stay awake.

Star Trek 2009 was at least fun, and I'll personally associate Zoe Saldana way more with Uhura than Blue Alien Girl. District 9 was also way more interesting than Avatar, not to mention its underlying themes. I appreciate both the fun sci-fi and the sci-fi that attempts social commentary. Avatar wasn't the former and it failed in trying to do the latter.

It didn't make a dent in pop culture. Avatar is a ride, not a film. Hollow and superficial. You forget it as soon as it's over. Exactly. The only reason it made any substantial amount of money was the 3D gimmick. If 3D had already come back with another random film, Avatar would have been a bomb of John Carter proportions.

Without looking, I know Stephen Lang, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Zoe Saldana, and the guy from Dodgeball and Grandma's Boy are in it. Can't name a single character they played, other than "pilot" or "scientist."
I got the dvd off a friend when it first came out. I struggled to stay awake watching it.

I still find it hilarious that there were super fans that got depression because Pandora wasn't a real place. Aside from the odd fact that somebody would like the movie that much, I wonder who the hell wants to visit a place where everything wants to kill you.

It says a lot that the guy who had to carry the story on his back, Sam Worthington, was back to doing supporting roles in direct-to-DVD tripe within a couple of years. I remember him more for Call of Duty, to be honest. Also, question as someone who's never seen Avatar or heard it's production, why are the sequels only now being made?

Also, question as someone who's never seen Avatar or heard it's production, why are the sequels only now being made? Basically Cameron decided to write four movies instead of just one and film them back-to-back, necessitating an elongated pre-production period, then decided he needed to invent underwater performance capture technology because one of the characters is a freediver.

Avatar was like a post 1980s George Lucas film, a triumph of technology which is lacking on every other front and everyone noticed that once it was available for home viewing.

I mean Australia is a pretty popular tourist destination <_<
