It's amazing how night and day this is with Detective Pikachu. This you've got stupid crap like the town called Green Hills while with Detective Pikachu they're just shrugging and going for it. Granted Pokemon's a lot safer of a money maker, I'll grant that, but still, you can tell which of the two's coming from a place of love.

It’s amazing what happens when one company has control over what is done with their IP and what happens when a company can go “I’m not sure about that” and have no real power to do much outside of that.

I don't know. Considering how well Detective Pikachu has handled bringing Pokemon into live action while still looking like themselves, I think there could've been more of a middle ground in how Sonic looks here.

The more I think about it, I really feel they did about the best they could if Sonic is supposed to be a living, breathing anthropomorphic hedgehog in the real world. There’s little tweaks I’d make, but for what they were aiming for I don’t think they did too bad. The really test is gonna be seeing how he interacts with things

Changes had to be made, modern Sonic is so skinny he makes Barbie look healthy and classic Sonic is too cartoony unless you go Roger Rabbit style and they are literally video game characters walking around the real world.

Why aren’t the doing an animated movie? Seriously, this seems like a license to print money if they go animated. Give it to the Spider-verse guys, they made Spider-Ham and Sp//dr work for f*** sakes

It’s amazing what happens when one company has control over what is done with their IP and what happens when a company can go “I’m not sure about that” and have no real power to do much outside of that.

I feel like SEGA say that just so they can look good and get their fanbase to buy the next mediocre sonic game, probably based on this movie. Let face it, SEGA themself done more damages to Sonic then this movie could possibly do.

Also is it just me or do Sonic look like Woody Woodpecker from that bad live action CGI movie.

That statement came from the director’s interview that Sega were hesitant about the redesign. Not saying that PROBABLY was the reason but more of a reference on where that came from.

Honestly, SEGA probably let their creative control go because they simply want a Sonic movie and try and get that money.

Eh, it’s tough to judge a new design from a static render. I’d like to see a trailer and see how Sonic moves and talks; that fan-film Sonic was more accurate to the games, but man, did it look like hot trash when it did anything.

The one on the right would look fine for a next gen game or an all-CGI film, but unfortunately it’s still too rubbery and toony for a hybrid movie. My only issue with Sonic on the left are that the feet and hands could be larger. Outside of that, it has charm.

I will never understand Hollywood's obsession with trying to make live action non-human cartoon characters look "realistic'. I mean they're already freaks of nature in that anthropomorphic animals don't even exist anyway so why go through this needless effort of trying to make them "fit in" when the rest of the world when they don't really fit in in the first place.

IMO they should've just taken the model on the right, closed the middle mono eye, shrunken the feet and hands, and called it a day. They need to go more "Jim Henson Creature Shop" and less "Bay-Turtles".
