Looking at it again, I can't even say its bad design as much as it feels like it genericized him to the point of being forgettable. This one feels less like a gaming icon with attitude and more the sort of bland mascot a local elementary school created for motivational posters.

"Sonic's the name, speed and clean hallways are my game!" To be fair, I think that’s the closest visual idea they could have reached for a Sonic that was still cute and charming, but was also a model more believable than the hyper-stylized models Sega tends to use, and could stand next to James Marsden without it looking too close to that live action Rocky and Bullwinkle film (which is partially why the Sonic model from the fan film looked so rough when they just slapped fur textures on the modern design). |

I kinda like the quills.
Like, I don't think this is an amazing design, but I am glad they didn't keep his weird goggle eyes, even if losing them makes it look so much less like Sonic.

Eh, I don't think he looks that bad.
Honestly the only issue I have is the shoes.. Kinda wish they had the sock bit.
It could be a lot worse.

... Well, even ignoring the horrific quality of the anthropomorphic style, it pretty much ditches everything that makes Sonic's character design work. It's baffling that they'd take away the most iconic shoes in video gaming for no real reason, in favour of something completely generic. It's a move that never makes anyone happy watching a video game film, and it's like setting money on fire when you could be mass producing merch of his actual shoes.
Legit the only good thing I can say about the whole design is that they went with the side smirk, rather than the centered mouth a la Sonic Adventure cutscenes.

Also the proportions still look way off... and if he wasn't blue I'm not sure that my mind would think Sonic...
but I do agree it could look A LOT worse.

I don't hate it, but I don't think it looks good either. Sonic is a very simple and iconic design, yet - like the Bay Turtles and the Bayformers - the moviemakers couldn't resist f***ing with it. Seriously though... don't get the random white hands... was it that hard to just have him wearing gloves? Seriously, they're making a movie about an anthropomorphic talking hedgehog that wears red sneakers, is a colour no hedgehog ever has been nor ever will be, and runs faster than the speed of sound. How is having him wear gloves is a step too far? |

I don't know, maybe it'll look better in action. But right now the still shots make him look like a high res version one of those Sonic knock offs you'd see in a cartoon like Reboot and such.
