I remember being very excited before it became obvious that Vince was going to squash the WCW and ECW talent
I really liked the RVD/Jeff Hardy feud and Austin/Angle as well

The rhyming contest Rock: "Booker T & Shane, the punk ass sucka & The silver spoon motherf***a Jericho: "Look what's standing in the ring (Steph & Ryno) we've got a manbeast & a Hosebeast, I mean we're dealing with the gore & The whore" They got serious shit for that. Rock was supposed to be cut off before he said motherf***er, wasn’t, so he kept going. Vince was furious.

I remember being very excited before it became obvious that Vince was going to squash the WCW and ECW talent I really liked the RVD/Jeff Hardy feud and Austin/Angle as well My friends and I were fans of both (our sports network reaired the main shows after school on Tuesday and Wednesday so we could follow both respectively) and the idea of seeing the two companies clash was possibly the most exciting thing we'd ever encountered. Then it went full corrupt a wish and turned to ash in our mouths.

Jim Ross and Paul Heyman on commentary especially at Survivor Series.
Heyman: "Why doesn't Hebner call for the bell like he likes to?!" Ross: "The Rock hasn't tapped!" Heyman: "That never stopped him before at Survivor Series!"

The entrance set for the Invasion PPV was pretty cool, with WWE and Alliance members coming out from opposite sides of the stage and down separate ramps that formed into one. It almost killed Trish, though... ![](https://thumbs.gfycat.com/BoringRepentantDalmatian-size_restricted.gif) Lita busting out some Spider-Man reflexes.

Not just Flair, but within barely a few months there was Flair and Steiner both of whom could've led WCW, the NWO who could've been a fun tweener entity in the invasion and Mysterio. I get from the wrestler's position they sat out for the money, but surely the WWE would have that many times over if they had them for the invasion. Steiner was a year later and even then in really no condition to be wrestling. And i believe its been said often that Vince knew he could have bought out all those contracts and made his money back and more but the WWE locker room would have revolted over WCW guys getting that much money. Of course Vince blames the locker room and not his own ego and fear that WCW might get cheered over his own promotion. Whats the locker room going to do? Jump to WCW?

The early, pre-Tacoma Raw reaction to WCW, with everything they were doing getting face pops and their wrestlers, from DDP on down, getting cheered. It’s still unfathomable to me how it all went wrong thanks to one hostile crowd in a market that wasn’t traditional WCW territory in the first place. What's funny about the whole thing is that on the house show loops they had been running with Booker T vs Lance Storm and the matches were all very well received, and all the agents wanted to go with that for the first WCW match... but come the day of the show Vince and Kevin Dunn decided that Buff was a more recognizable name (may be true, but Lance was much higher on the card at the time than Buff). It was all a shit show, and Buff got himself a lot of heat early and plans were scrapped. If you listen to any shoot from guys who came to WWF initially, they all blame Buff for ruining things not just because of that match, but his attitude

If you listen to any shoot from guys who came to WWF initially, they all blame Buff for ruining things not just because of that match, but his attitude I will say that everything until the actual match started was thrilling, including the ring apron and WWF bug changing to WCW, as well as Scott Hudson calling the match (which they repeated on Smackdown and Heat). For a brief, brilliant moment I felt like WCW was back. Another thing I actually liked were the WCW polos their refs were. It was surprising how visually distinct they bothered to make the pre-Alliance WCW at first. WWE has proven they’re terrible at deviation from the McMahon/Dunn style, but everything up until ECW’s entrance felt like it was an invading promotion and not a mere stable.

The Angle vs. Austin feud in the Summer of 2001 was outstanding. Angle should have had a long run as a face after that. I always find myself wondering what would have happened to Angle's career had they not done the completely unnecessary heel turn. He was as over as any babyface had been in a long time

Rob Van Dam Stephanie in short dresses Kurt Angle
I never thought they'd be able to get Kurt over as a face, but dammit, they did it.

Thing is that even though the Alliance was booked to fail, the plan all along was to have a WWF show and a WCW show. The networks scuttled the plan because they were paying for WWF shows, not WCW shows. Because they’re morons apparently. If I remember right, Smackdown was to stay WWF and Raw was to be rebranded Nitro. Would have been weird because Smackdown was the most WCW thing ever when it was in full swing and Raw was booked total WWF.

When I was in 6th grade, I wrote a Rock-themed party to Smash Mouth's "All Star." I don't remember all of it, but the first line was "Somebody once told me The Rock's a big jabroni, so I kicked his candy ass." My mom found the song in my jeans pocket when she was doing my laundry and banned me from watching WWF. I suffered through the demise of WCW because of that. When the invasion PPV happened, I asked my mom if I could order it, even though I was banned, because WCW people would be in it. Her response was "Oh I forgot I banned you from WWF." So the invasion let me watch again, so that's good.
