There are 3 sides to this story, whose side are you on?
1. WWF. Bail out their little brother, by loaning Taz. But there is a catch. He would job to the WWF champion shortly after. Would not put the ECW title over the WWF title.
2. WCW. Stole Awesome, legally from underneath ECW. Put him on TV, but had to get the belt off of him. If you were on WCW's side, you couldn't give two s*its about ECW, especially since Heyman did pay him money owed to Awesome.
3. ECW. Tried to get him to work out a deal, while working without a contract. One of Heyman's blunders, but bless his sole. From ECW's stance, he betrayed he locker room and the ECW title, showing up on Nitro.
So which stance did you agree with the most? I think this might be maybe the only issue in history that involved all 3 companies at the time. If only this span off a fantasy card of WWF vs. WCW vs. ECW stars.
We could've had a PPV of all PPV's.

WWF didn't need to sort out an ECW/WCW dispute, or give free publicity to an ECW PPV in which they let a WWF contracted guy wrestle. But they did.
I know who I don't blame: Mike Awesome. Guy had bills to pay, and you weren't getting paid in ECW.

WCW was definitely seen as the bad guy in this at the time, so that’s a big reason why the WWE sent Taz, just them making WCW look like goons again. Cant blame Awesome for taking the money, but he probably should have handled it a little better.

Regarding Awesome's contractual status with ECW, it was said on the 2012 ECW Unreleased Vol. 1 set that Awesome had a $100,000/year contract with ECW and that it written into the contract that ECW had 90 days to make up for bounced checks. In order to get ECW to give up their claim to Awesome, WCW had to pay ECW $75,000.

I love on the Rise and Fall of ECW DVD where Vince himself cops to Tazz losing to Triple H as a mistake.

Ah, the Egyptian Ballroom at the Murat Center.
I wish I have the chance to go to a wrestling show there (that wasn't hot oil midgets).

I suppose if I have to vote here I'll say WWF mainly because they tried to sort of help out with Taz. Then jobbed him to HHH for no good reason of course. It's tough to feel a ton of sympathy for the others here. Keep in mind if Rob Van Dam hadn't broken his leg a couple of months earlier this is all a moot point. He would have gone over Awesome at Living Dangerously 2000 and they could have let him walk. That RVD injury was probably the worst timed injury for any promotion ever.
As far as Awesome goes, I can absolutely blame him. He could have filed a breach of contract and actually been a wronged party rather than showing up on a competing TV show with a world title belt.

I love on the Rise and Fall of ECW DVD where Vince himself cops to Tazz losing to Triple H as a mistake. I thought this was a very honest part of the interview, to be fair. Less honest was that this DVD also debuted the ol' 'business is about help yourself, not hurt the other guy.'

Hearing that he somehow betrayed the locker room by going to WCW is asinine. Imagine going someplace to earn money and not have to have it written into your contract a "bounced check" clause.
Almost anybody else in ECW would have done the same thing, and I think most did.

It's kinda funny because didn't WWE do something similar almost 10 years earlier with Ric Flair? How did they get the World title off him? I forget.

Flair gave the Big Gold back after he got his deposit plus interest back. Remember the Big Gold used to represent the WCW AND NWA World Championship. But before that WCW sued the WWF for having the belt on screen, so they distorted it.

Yeah I remember it used to be NWA and WCW and the distortion but I wasn't sure if he forfeited it or lost it in a match.

Both left for the same reason, but one handled it way more professionally then the other. Lance went to Paul, said you breached my contract, I consider it null and void. I will continue to work for you, but I will be exploring my options to leave. Awesome showed up on Nitro, without telling anyone in advance. Dick move

What, are you the Baltimore Colts? If I'm him I'm telling Heyman I'm going, then dropping the belt on my way out.

Are you telling this to Ric Flair in 1992, too?

Was this the only case of an at-the-time-WWF-contracted wrestler facing an at-the-time-WCW-contracted wrestler in a match?
I know Goldberg made an ass of himself at a toy convention in front of Triple H, but that's the only other thing I heard about.

WCW didn't have to let Awesome go back to drop the belt. They didn't have to let their hot new signing job on someone else's TV.
The only person/entity in this situation that can faulted at all for doing anything wrong is Heyman/ECW.
