Was this the only case of an at-the-time-WWF-contracted wrestler facing an at-the-time-WCW-contracted wrestler in a match? I know Goldberg made an ass of himself at a toy convention in front of Triple H, but that's the only other thing I heard about. I thought there were some crossovers between the two on those Brian Pillman Memorial Shows, but could be mistaken. Pretty sure it's happened in Japan a few times too. Has probably happened a number of times on the indies during the period WWE and WCW were both letting their super-low-tier guys work elsewhere so long as it was not televised. Of course it wasn't an actual match, but Vader (WCW) invaded Memphis on his Road Kill Tour during the same episode the WWF was doing its invasion of the territory. And of course, the pre-WCW title vs. title bouts between Race/Backlund, etc.

For the most part WWE did right by ECW but jobbing Tazz like that was inexcusable.

WWF didn't need to sort out an ECW/WCW dispute, or give free publicity to an ECW PPV in which they let a WWF contracted guy wrestle. But they did. I know who I don't blame: Mike Awesome. Guy had bills to pay, and you weren't getting paid in ECW. Hence, why Joey’s Styles’ One Night Stand rant on Awesome was uncalled for. One of the most uncomfortable commentary bits I can ever recall, especially given what happened next. At least JR's Rumble 97 moment is only retrospectively uncomfortable! At the time, he was paying Owen praise.

If I'm him I'm telling Heyman I'm going, then dropping the belt on my way out. Why? Paul was a notorious liar and frequently bounced checks. Why have loyalty to him when he didn't have it with you?
Are you telling this to Ric Flair in 1992, too?
Flair actually got fired while he was the champion by some moron, and had some ownership of the physical Big Gold Belt. He was perfectly in the right to force WCW's hand to get his deposit back. Awesome could have said "Look Paul, you don't want your belt going vacant, but you can't pay me the rest of what you owe me. Pay me what you can and I'll drop the belt to Rhino before I head out."

Yeah, Flair, as far as he was concerned, never got his deposit back, so he was the physical owner of the belt. That's on Jim Herd, not Ric.

ECW was born out of a belt being vacant, Paul could figure something out pretty quick on how to proceed. Heyman would have already been working out ten different potential angles to go with to maximize the fallout. Paul didn't give a crap that the title lineage had some asterisks in it, he was a story man. The story mattered, not the statistics. The only people who hold to this as the reason to be angry at Awesome...are the fans. The only people that despise Mike Awesome because he disrespected the ECW title are the fans. Period. And Heyman knew that and Heyman, being the guerilla warfare guy he is, played on that. It helped his narrative, nothing more. Here's how this works out in the real world: *A Phone Rings* "Mister Johnson, it's Tom Dole. I just called to let you know I started a new job at the McDonald's down the road yesterday, so I'll be quitting here." "But why?" "Well, because they will actually pay me." "But I made you Employee of the Month!" "Yes, but you haven't paid me in months." "Okay, fine. Well, at least come in today so you can work a full shift, give the keys over and train the new hire on how to use the grill. You owe me that. You owe our customers that. You...hello? Hello?"

Thankyou so much for this post, this metaphor is perfect. I've always sided with Awesome even as a defender of Heyman generally.
