Roasted brussel sprouts are amazing. Can’t do them boiled. Fried in either butter or a little bacon fat with a pinch of red pepper flakes. Or you can shred them up finely with the shredding disc in a food processor, or cut them by hand if you have the knife skills. The work well in coleslaw recipes, especially vinegar ones. As for broccoli, I love it raw. It is good with hummus or french onion dip.

The lesson to take from this question is boiling food is one of the worst crimes you can commit to a raw ingredient.

It's been said before, but it bears repeating: eating a food prepared in one way at a younger age will absolutely define your reaction and palate to said food. Whether it's boiled vegetables, overcooked (or undercooked) meat, poorly-made ethnic dishes, even just unappealing aesthetics or popular opinions can give you terrible first impressions that will turn you away. Growing up as a kid in the 80s, cartoons would constantly rag on things like Liver and Onions or Brussel Sprouts as "the worst possible food," yet once cooked can be amazing for some.
Same thing could be said for simple ingredients as they are presented as well. My favorite example: I've got a coworker who turns her nose up at pork belly, but loves bacon. No amount of arguments would change her mind on this mindset because of how it was once prepared for her, despite the fact that they are one and the same. Same goes for my wife's apprehension to pickles, but loves her cucumber water...it's just how it is.

Broccoli is a staple here. Cook it up with egg noodles, shrimp, and my beloved roasted garlic parmesan alfredo sauce and OMG. The florets fall apart and spread through the entire thing, it's soooooo good. Even eat the leftovers cold, it turns out like a pasta salad.

Brussel sprouts are cabbage midgets.... And like Bobby Heenan said "Never trust a midget" And when's following the Brain ever gone wrong?

Mom used to just boil the shit out of them until they were an unflavorful green overcooked mush. School dumped brussel sprouts from the giant can straight into giant pan and served then luke warm.
I didn't have a good brussel or broccoli until I was old enough to cook for myself.

Honestly I don't mind boiled broccoli Boiling vegetables is not as horrible a thing as some people on this thread make it out to be, as long as it's done right. With broccoli and brussel sprouts for every pound you're looking to boil you really only need 1/2 Cup of water and a dash of salt, you should never boil them for more then about five minutes, and you need to serve them as quickly as possible after that five minutes is up. Any more and they become very bitter and mushy and gross.
